One of the fashion industry’s most credited and beloved hairdressers is noneother than the legendary Oribe Canales. Born in Cuba in 1956, Canales always had a passion for hair and beauty. He and his Cuban family migrated over to the US when he was just 6 years old, and later in 1976, he made the big move to one of the world’s fashion capitals: New York City. He began his work in hair styling at the Plaza salon, and then received his first editorial credit from GQ magazine.
Ten years later, Canales established his first, very own hair salon in the upscale Upper West Side in Manhattan, and went on from there to open salons all over the city. Very sadly, Canales passed away in December 2018 from liver and kidney failure. Luckily, we will always remember Oribe for always looking his absolute best, such as in this photo when he attended Celebrity Makeup Artist Scott Barnes’s ‘About Face’ book launch in New York, in January 2010.
