The 2020 NBA All-Star Game will go down in history as the night that basketball said ‘thank you’ to Kobe Bryant. Taking place at the United Arena in Chicago, Illinois on February 16, the 69th All-Star Game turned into a celebration of the life and legacy of the Los Angeles Lakers star, following his death in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, 2020. Killed in a wreck that took the life of his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna ‘Gigi’ Bryant, and seven others, the man known as ‘Black Mamba’ was honored throughout the night. The two participating teams – Team LeBron James and Team Giannis Antetokounmpo – wore jerseys bearing the numbers 24 and 2, matching those of Kobe and his basketball-playing daughter. Jennifer Hudson was tasked with performing a Kobe tribute before the start of the game, while DJ Khaled, Quavo, and Lil Wayne were enlisted to join Chance The Rapper for his halftime show. The format of the game was even changed to reflect Kobe. All in all, it was a night to pay respects to one of basketball’s biggest and most beloved icons.
