Nancy Mace began her first term in the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2021 after winning South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District seat in the 2020 election. Her political journey started earlier, in 2014, when she made her debut by running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in South Carolina—a race she ultimately lost. She later served in the South Carolina House of Representatives, first elected in a 2017 special election and then re-elected in 2018.
Before entering politics, Mace made history as one of the first women to graduate from The Citadel’s Corps of Cadets in 1999. She later authored a memoir detailing her groundbreaking experience at the military college and went on to launch her own consulting firm, The Mace Group.
During her first year in Congress, Mace gained national attention for her willingness to challenge members of her own party. In 2021, she publicly criticized Rep. Lauren Boebert’s Islamophobic remarks, sparking a brief but high-profile feud with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.
