Born Thomas Mark Harmon on Sept. 2, 1951, the actor who would bring life to Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs first made his mark – pun intended — in the 1980s. After scoring a few acting roles in the 1970s – including parts on ‘Adam-12,’ ‘Emergency!’ and ‘Laverne & Shirley’ – Mark experienced his professional breakthrough after landing the part of Dr. Robert Caldwell in ‘St. Elsewhere.’ The role would raise his profile (and ultimately earn him the title of People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ in 1986.)

 

After ‘St. Elsewhere,’ Mark spent the rest of the 1980s and ‘90s on television, appearing on a series of programs including ‘Reasonable Doubts,’ and ‘Chicago Hope.’ In 2003, Mark portrayed Special Agent Gibbs in episodes of ‘JAG,’ essentially spinning the part off into ‘NCIS.’ For eighteen seasons, Mark played the lead role and executively produced the award-winning series. In 2021, he wrapped his career as a series regular, though he did sign on to continue co-producing the show (with the possibility of appearing later down the line.)
