Lionel is best known as an Argentine professional soccer player. In 2021, he captained the Argentina national team and was part of their win at the Copa America final – their first since 1993. It was also his first win with his national team.

Before the 2021 Copa America final, Lionel played his professional career with La Liga club Barcelona, where he captained from 2018-2021.

Lionel was born and raised in Argentina and relocated to Spain at age 13. He made his competitive soccer debut at age 17 in 2004 and established himself as a notable player for the Barcelona club for the next three years before helping Barcelona win the first treble in Spanish football in the 2008-09 season.

As of 2021, he was Argentina’s highest appearance-maker and all-time leading goalscorer, proving he’s made an impressive mark on the sport.
