Julian Assange is a computer programmer who helped find the organization WikiLeaks in 2006. WikiLeaks is responsible for publishing secret and classified information, which they receive from anonymous sources. Over the years, the organization has published more than ten million documents. Assange’s work with the organization is highly controversial, and has been investigated by United States authorities for years. From June 2012 until April 2019, Assange lived at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he was granted asylum by Ecuador’s president. His decision to take refuge came amidst fears that he would be extradited to Sweden following sexual assault allegations against him. The sexual assault case was dropped in 2017, but Assange remained at the embassy for fear of being extradited to the United States. In April 2019, Ecuador withdrew Assange’s asylum, claiming he “repeatedly” broke the embassy’s rules and had indulged in “discourteous and aggressive behavior.” He was arrested on April 11, 2019 for breaching U.K. bail conditions and failing to surrender to a court warrant that was issued in June 2012. Later, U.S. authorities also arrested him on an extradition warrant. Click through to see more photos of Julian Assange.
