United States President Joe Biden signs the Respect for Marriage Act on Dec. 13, 2022. The ceremony took place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC alongside VP Kamala Harris and First Lady Jill Biden. The law protects same-sex and interracial marriages, which Biden has been speaking about often in recent months.

While signing the act into law, Biden handed over the pen to Harris, who is in an interracial marriage herself. Nancy Pelosi and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff were also in attendance and applauded in approval. Biden took to Twitter that morning to reveal the exciting news. “Today, I sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law – a landmark civil rights bill that honors the courage and sacrifice of generations of couples who fought for marriage equality and equal rights,” he wrote.

Later, he also tweeted about how happy he was to sign the act into law. “Today is a good day. Today, America takes another step toward equality. Toward liberty and justice not just for some, but for all. Because today, I sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law,” the president penned.
