‘Groundhog Day’ Cast: Then & Now — Let’s try this again… February 2nd means it’s another Groundhog Day. While many are looking out for Punxsutawney Phil’s shadow as their winter forecast, others will be celebrating with a screening of the 1993 comedy classic Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray. In the movie, Bill plays a cynical TV weatherman who gets caught in a time-loop, forcing him to relive the day on repeat. He eventually falls for his producer Rita, played by Andie MacDowell, and tries to figure out if he can use the time-trap to seduce her. No spoilers… things don’t really go as planned.

The movie was a box-office success, earning over $105 million to become one of 1993’s biggest blockbusters. Groundhog Day also earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Bill Murray

Bill Murray — Bill Murray was praised for playing the snarky but soft Phil Connors in Groundhog Day. Seen in Nov. 2021 on the right, the star rose to fame on SNL. He’s starred in countless comedy classics, including Caddyshack (1980), Ghostbusters (1984), Scrooged (1988), What About Bob? (1991), Kingpin (1996), Osmosis Jones (2001), and Lost in Translation (2003.)

Andie MacDowell

Andie MacDowell — Andie MacDowell played love interest Rita Hanson in the film. She’s seen donning Dior at the 6th Annual InStyle Awards on Nov. 15, 2021 on the right.

Andie started her career as a model, shooting for Vogue and other top magazines before making her film debut. Then, she became a key part of the 80s “Brat Pack,” appearing in St. Elmo’s Fire (1985). She earned critical acclaim for Sex, Lies, and Videotape in 1989. Other key films include Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Multiplicity (1996), The Muse (1999), Footloose (2011), Magic Mike XXL (2015), and Ready or Not (2019). She is the mom of actress Margaret Qualley, who she starred with in the miniseries Maid (2021.)

Chris Elliott

Chris Elliott — Chris Elliott played Larry the cameraman in Groundhog Day. The funny guy is seen at 2018 Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 20, 2018 to the right.

Chris started writing sketches on Late Night with David Letterman (1982–1988), which won him four Emmys. He had his own show Get a Life (1990–1992) before recurring roles on Everybody Loves Raymond (2003–2005), How I Met Your Mother (2009–2014), and Schitt’s Creek (2015–2020). His other big film credits include Cabin Boy (1994), which he wrote and directed, as well as There’s Something About Mary (1998), Snow Day (2000) and Scary Movie 2 (2001).

Stephen Tobolowsky

Stephen Tobolowsky — Stephen Tobolowsky was Ned Ryerson, the annoying insurance salesman Phil encounters repeatedly during his time-loop. He’s seen in a portrait for his show One Day At A Time in Jan. 2020 to the right.

Stephen is one of those faces you know you know in Hollywood, appearing in over 200 movies over his career. His major TV roles include Deadwood (2005-2006), Heroes (2007-2008), Glee (2009-2011), Californication (2011-2014), Silicon Valley (2016-2017), and The Goldbergs (2014-2022.) Stephen is also the creator of the popular podcast The Tobolowsky Files.

Brian Doyle-Murray — Brotherly love! Bill’s brother Brian Doyle-Murray has a quick cameo as a man choking on steak in the movie. Set out to do good deeds, Phil saves him. Brian is seen in 1995 on the left and in 2019 to the right.
