It’s hard to believe ‘Girl,Interrupted’ hit theaters all the way back on January 14, 2000! The heartbreaking drama not only shed a light on the importance of mental healthcare — but also brought Angelina Jolie an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Based on Susanna Kaysen’s 1993 memoir of the same name, the film tells the story of a teenage girl being place in a mental institution in 1967 after attempting suicide. Angelina, Winona Ryder, Brittany Murphy, Clea DuVall and Elisabeth Moss starred as patients suffering from a range of mental illnesses. Rounding out the cast were Jared Leto, Jeffrey Tambor, Whoopi Goldberg and Vanessa Redgrave.
Angelina’s role as Lisa, a rebellious and manipulative patient, made the young star a household name. She then became a Hollywood icon with blockbusters like ‘Tomb Raider,’ ‘Maleficent’ and Marvel’s ‘Eternals.’ Her romance with her ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ co-star Brad Pitt and their bitter divorce caused her to grab headlines as well. Now the mother of six enjoys directing and giving back, as she is a celebrated humanitarian.
