Alyssa Milano was at the forefront of the #MeToo movement in 2017, and continued to use her fame and power to encourage people to vote in the 2018 midterm elections. Alyssa was outspoken in her desire to turn the House and Senate Blue, and she helped achieve that in the House! She spoke to HL exclusively about why she’s so passionate about politics:

““My favorite thing about politics is at the local level. I go all over the country and I will volunteer in campaigns I believe in and I suggest that everybody finds a candidate that you believe in and go campaign. Go volunteer and walk door to door. That is the greatest reminder of what politics is. It’s not this big thing where we feel that we don’t have control over it. It’s really at the state level that’s so important. I mean, I have been in people’s garages with American flags Scotch-taped to the wall where I am stuffing envelopes and, to me, that is the most romantic thing about this country is that it functions like that, so I want everyone to have that experience. Everyone should go out and volunteer.”

Time’s Up picked up as a sister protest to #MeToo, with hundreds of women in Hollywood (and male allies) fighting for better working conditions for ALL women. No sexual harassment, no fear of being fired for being a victim. Actresses organized a red carpet protest at the 2018 Golden Globes, all wearing black to denote their support of the movement.

Millie Bobby Brown became UNICEF’s youngest Goodwill Ambassador this year! She encouraged fans to sign the #GoBlue petition, a call to world leaders to fulfill and uphold children’s rights. The 14-year-old also made a splash at the 2018 Kids Choice Awards by wearing a denim jacket emblazoned with the names of the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting. What a remarkable young woman!

“”Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School,” George said in a statement. “Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country…our children’s lives depend on it.”

LeBron James opened the I Promise school in Akron, Ohio, an academy for underprivileged kids fully funded by the NBA star. The incredible school, which offers ample opportunities to the students, was mocked and criticized by conservatives.

He even gifted each student a bike, so they have a way to get to school no matter what. What an incredible man! The school is currently open for 240 third and fourth graders, and will expand to second and fifth grades in 2019 until it’s fully grades 1-8 by 2022.

The school is also providing services for parents — educational, career and emotional support.“We are going to be that groundbreaking school that will be a nationally recognized model for urban and public school excellence,” I Promise principal Brandi Davis told USA Today. “We are letting people know it is about true wrap-around support, true family integration and true compassion.”

Chef José Andrés was already world-renowned, but his work helping Hurricane victims has made him a hero and a Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Chef Andrés and his nonprofit World Central Kitchen did more to feed Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria than any other single government or non-government agency. He and his team have also fed natural distaster victims in Texas, the Carolinas, Hawaii, and California.

Rep. John Delaney (D-MD) nominated him for the Nobel, writing, “With an incredible spirit and an innovative mind, Mr. Andrés is solving one of the world’s ancient problems and supplying world leaders with a new road map to provide more effective disaster relief in the future.”

Meghan Markle hasn’t had a ton of time to acclimated yet after becoming the Duchess of Sussex AND getting pregnant, but when she does, she’s vowed that her cause of choice will be women’s equality.

She’s done an amazing charitable act already, though. She produced a cookbook, “Together: Our Community Cookbook”, which showcases over 50 recipes from women affected by the Grenfell Tower fire in London. Proceeds from the cookbook support the victims of the deadly 2017 fire, and it’s become a major best-seller.

“The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil started the “I Weigh” Instagram project after seeing a post someone made of the Kardashians labeled by their weights. She asked women to post pics on Instagram labeled with the things they valued about themselves other than weight, and the movement exploded.

Jameela dealt with body image issues her entire life, including being bedridden by a cat accident when she was a teen, and knew what it was like to have your self-worth conflated with attractiveness. She wanted other women to celebrate what had taken herself so long to realize.

Chance The Rapper gives back to his hometown of Chicago every chance he gets, and 2018 was no exception. He even bought the struggling local news publication “Chicagoist” and announced it the same night he dropped new music! Chance also raised $2 million to fund arts and education at Chicago public schools, hosts monthly open-mic nights to raise money for the city’s youth, and partnered with the Special Olympics this year.

The mission of his phenomenal SocialWorks charity, which helps the youth of the city? “To inspire creativity, to build dreams, to let you be, you.”

Amazing! According to Chance, SocialWorks “aims to empower youth through the arts, education, and civic engagement while fostering leadership, accessibility, and positivity within Chicago. Our initiatives, OpenMike, Warmest Winter, Kids of the Kingdom, the New Chance: Arts & Literature Fund, and My State of Mind, were created to advocate for youth and the fulfillment of their success in all its forms. We’re excited to continue to bring impact and we hope to continue to do so through innovation and collaboration.”

Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus lost their home in the horrifying Woolsey Fire in LA, but that didn’t stop them from helping others in the same situation. They had money; they would be fine. So they donated $500,000 to fire relief through Miley’s Happy Hippie Foundation. They wrote, in a statement:

“Miley and Liam lost their home but are very grateful to be safe along with their animals! Their community and state are very special to them and they want to give back to the place that has created so many beautiful memories for themselves and others. These funds will be used for those in financial need, emergency relief assistance, community rebuilding, wildfire prevention and climate change resilience.”

After raising money for Hurricane Maria victims in 2017 with his #PuberMe campaign, Stephen Colbert continued his excellent charity work by publishing his book, “Whose Boat Is This Boat?” Colbert said that the book “wrote itself” in an interview with the Associated Press, because the title and contents were all baffling remarks made by President Trump while visiting the Carolinas after Hurricane Florence. The book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies, raising $1.25 million for hurricane relief!
