Amandla Stenberg is an American actress and singer. She pursued acting at a very young age, landing her first Disney catalog modeling shoots when she was only four. She followed it up with numerous national commercial appearances, before landing her first film role in 2011’s Colombiana, appearing as the younger version of Zoe Saldana’s characters. Her breakthrough came in 2012’s The Hunger Games, when she was cast as the character Rue. She reprised the role in the 2013 sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. She is also known for her role in The Hate U Give in which she played Starr Carter. Although she may only be in her early 20s, Amandla was included in Time’s list of Most Influential Teens in both 2015 and 2016, and she was included in Oprah Winfrey’s SuperSoul 100 list of visionaries and influential leaders in 2016.
Amandla’s name means “power or strength” in Zulu. She is involved in the Share Our Strength charity, working to end childhood hunger in the United States.
