Britney Spears’ most famous marriages were with ex-husband Keven Federline and now-estranged husband Sam Asghari, but what happened between her and her first husband, Jason Alexander? The former spouses were married for only 55 hours, so why did they get a divorce? Keep reading to go inside Britney and Jason’s short-lived marriage.

Why Did Britney Spears and Jason Alexander Divorce?

In 2004, the “Circus” artist got married to Jason in Las Vegas. Less than three days later, the pair got their marriage annulled, and fans wondered whether this was a typical Sin City mistake or if there was more drama behind the scenes.

Nearly 20 years later, Britney explained the truth behind her and Jason’s actions in her memoir, The Woman in Me.

“I was just honestly very drunk. And probably, in a more general sense at that time in my life, very bored,” she admitted in the book. Though the brief fling was nothing other than “innocent fun,” Britney explained, her family reacted as if she had “started World War III.”

How Long Were Britney Spears and Jason Alexander Together?

It is still unclear whether or not Britney was in a romantic relationship with Jason. However, they were childhood friends. During the 2021 “Toxic: The Britney Spears Story” podcast, Jason claimed that at the time they got their brief marriage annulled, Britney’s team handed him paperwork that allegedly would have allowed them to have a “proper marriage” if they wanted to be in a relationship.

“They told me if I would sign the contracts — the annulment — they would let me and Britney continue our relationship, and if we felt the same way in six months they would give us a proper marriage,” Jason claimed. “They were allowing Britney and I to still have phone communication. So, we were talking every day, and I still believed the story I was told, that they were going to let us continue to talk and then we would have this marriage … in the future if we felt the same way.”

Are Britney Spears and Jason Alexander Friends?

In 2020, Jason showed his full support for Britney during the #FreeBritney movement, telling Us Weekly at the time that her conservatorship “affected” both him and her.

“This is an unfortunate situation that’s been in her life for a long time,” he explained. “It’s affected me and her, and that makes me part of it. I’ve been quiet for 10 years, and I feel [like] what a good time to come forward now with the movement making noise and the conservatorship hearings going on. I wanna see Britney get what she rightly deserves, and from personal conversations, she doesn’t want to be under the conservatorship obviously, and it’s affecting her life still to this day in a negative way. And it’s time for it to be over [sic].”

Britney’s conservatorship — which began in 2008 — was terminated in 2021.

Though Jason appeared to be a supportive friend to the pop star, he crashed her wedding to Sam in 2022. To make matters worse, Jason walked into their wedding venue during an Instagram Live session, which fans screen-recorded at the time.

“Britney Spears invited me here. She’s my first wife. My only wife,” Jason said in the video. “I’m her first husband. I’m here to crash the wedding cause nobody [is] here but Sam. So where the f–k’s the family?”

After he was removed from the premises, Jason was booked with three misdemeanors, and Sam and Britney later had a three-year restraining order against Jason granted.
