Dame Maggie Smith has died at 89, her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, revealed in a statement on Friday, September 27.
Known for her iconic roles as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey, Smith leaves behind a remarkable legacy after eight decades in acting. Beyond her professional achievements, the London native, with her first husband, English actor Sir Robert Stephens, raised her two sons, Larkin and Stephens, who have pursued successful careers in film and television and started families of their own.

Maggie Smith’s eldest son, born in 1967, has two children with his wife, Suki Stephens: Daisy Grace Stephens and Nathaniel Stephens.
Daisy was born in July 2006, a year after Chris and Suki tied the knot, followed by Nathaniel, who arrived in December 2008. Maggie’s second child, Toby, has three kids with his wife, Anna-Louise Plowman, a New Zealand actress.
They share a son, Elijah Alistair Stephens, born in 2007, and two daughters, Tallulah Tara and Kura Stephens, born in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Like his older brother Chris, Toby tends to maintain a low profile, but he has occasionally shared insights about his children in the past.
In 2009, Toby revealed that his mother had mixed feelings about Tallulah’s name. He shared with The Telegraph, “She thought of Tallulah Bankhead, a Hollywood actress of some repute. ‘I love the name, of course, but you must understand she was a very naughty woman,’ she told me. ‘She was addicted to cocaine and had, among other things, a huge lesbian following.'”
And in 2014, while starring in Starz’s Black Sails, Toby shared what the “perfect Sunday” looks like to him: spending time with his family at home. He told Express, “I’ve recently spent a lot of time away, filming in South Africa, so being back here is fantastic. After an extended period abroad, being reunited with my family is very grounding. On a film set, you tend to get tunnel vision and think work is all there is, especially with the pressure of a big production. So it’s very good to get back into the parental routine and remind yourself that there are other things in the world which are much more important.”
