Australian comedic actress Romy Teperson has built a career focused on entertaining audiences across film and television. Her acting work and ability to connect with audiences have helped her land roles in Hollywood, including her appearance in Friends: The Reunion, where she appeared as the only Australian cast member. She is especially proud of this role, as it followed a global casting process that lasted more than a year, which she describes as a “full circle moment.”

“The first time I ever watched an episode of Friends, I remember thinking I was witnessing magic,” Teperson says. It was while she was attending high school in Australia that she found herself “mesmerised” by the popular show.

“I remember watching it and thinking I had never seen anything like that before in language, in delivery, in timing and pacing. It was the first time I fully understood and viscerally experienced comedy. It sparked what would become a career spanning more than 20 years and a range of professional credits in the acting industry,” says Teperson.

It was this passion for the show that led her to travel to Los Angeles to attend live studio tapings of Friends for three episodes. Watching the live show strengthened Teperson’s interest in pursuing a career in Hollywood.

Her journey from being inspired by the sitcom to pursuing a career as an actress to ultimately being cast on the reunion show reflects her experience working as an actress across television, film, and sketch comedy.

A Global Upbringing That Shaped a Comedic Voice

Born in South Africa and raised in both Australia and the United States, Teperson says her time in the U.S. was especially impactful. She was influenced by the shows she saw on television and wanted to entertain others and make them laugh. Raised in a Jewish family, her humour is very much shaped by her identity and grounded in her faith and family life.

Teperson’s first foray into entertainment was putting on plays and puppet shows for her family. She would “shamelessly deliver punch lines, do impressions, throw in physical comedy, and of course, the signature Jewish humour, everything I could to make my family laugh. It gave me so much heartfelt joy.”

Professional Training in Acting

“The passion for this industry runs very deep to this day, and there is no version of my life I would choose to nobly pursue anything else,” Teperson says.

Dedicated to her craft, Teperson graduated from the Drama School Conservatory at The Australian Academy of Dramatic Art, where she later secured representation. From that day forth, she had her sights set on the US. Upon graduation, she was awarded the William H. Macy Scholarship, a scholarship awarded by the program at the time, to study at The Atlantic Theatre Company in New York. Not enough for the ambitious actress, she was also accepted into well-regarded acting programs, including Juilliard Extension and the Yale Conservatory for Actors.

This training really honed her comedic talent when she trained with the three well-known American comedy institutions: The Groundlings, Upright Citizens Brigade, and The Second City (Conservatory). It is these three places that have trained many well-known comedic performers, including those who went on to Saturday Night Live and beyond.

She has shared credits and performed in scenes opposite actors, including Jennifer Aniston, Amy Poehler, Melissa McCarthy, Busy Phillips, Cuba Gooding Jr., Wilmer Valderrama, Matt Walsh, Jason Clarke, and Amanda Keller, with her work appearing in productions distributed across major platforms.

She has also taken on the lead role in the action-comedy Feature Film The Turned, starring opposite Sara West (Neighbours), and Next Door To The Velinskys, starring opposite Matt Doran (The Matrix, Star Wars Episode II).

In addition to acting, Teperson has worked behind the scenes in the entertainment industry, including serving as an associate producer with Made Up Stories, the production company founded by Bruna Papandrea, known for projects such as Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers.

Among her upcoming projects is a leading role in the feature film comedy I Give It A Week, directed by Rachel Paulson (Punch You Entertainment).

In addition to achieving a range of on-screen roles, Teperson continues to deliver character-driven comedic performances across film and television. Her work to date spans film and television collaborations that include award-winning actors and major studios and streaming platforms in the United States and internationally.
