The season 7 premiere of Scandal was all kinds of amazing, but there was one very important person missing: Fitzgerald Thomas Grant III. The episode focused primarily on Olivia (Kerry Washington) as she navigated her new roles as Mellieā€™s (Bellamy Young) chief of staff and head of B613. Fitz is out of the White House, so I was anxious to see where the show would take his character. Heā€™s also moved to Vermont to work on his presidential library. His absence during the premiere was definitely felt.

There was a nod to the very first episode of Scandal when Olivia looks longingly at Fitz on TV. The scene in the season 7 premiere featured Olivia doing the exact same thing, proving once again that Olivia and Fitz are far from over. Yes, I ship #Olitz hard. Donā€™t @ me.

What about the second episode of the final season? Well, the photos ABC has released donā€™t feature Fitz at all. Tony Goldwyn, 57, is photographed as the director of the episode, but not as Fitz. Can Olivia just take a trip to Vermont soon? Fitz has made some bad decisions over the years, but we still love him for it. Tony couldnā€™t say much about Fitzā€™s role in Scandalā€™s final season, but he did tell press at Esquireā€˜s September Issue ā€œMavericks of Styleā€ event that creator Shonda Rhimes wants to ā€œtry some new stuff and take these characters that weā€™ve really gotten to know so well and explore them more deeply.ā€ Will we see a whole new side to Fitz in these final episodes?

Scandal airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
