When the boat Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was on, on Sept. 25, crashed, a rescue mission was reportedly sent out to help those on board in the terrifying incident, while helicopters with spotlights searched for bodies. Looking at the newly released pictures (in the gallery above) of the boat on the rocks, with the bow up in the air and the inside of the ship facing the rocks, is just terrifying. The light of day makes everything more sad because you can see how broken everything is, and what a mess has been made of the boat and people’s lives.

Investigators believe the boat was speeding along the water as fast as it could go when the crash happened, according to TMZ. Authorities reported that there are no signs that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Officials have said that none of the victims were wearing life jackets. How heartbreaking that is for the family and friends of all the victims, including the 24-year-old MLB player, who was one of the three who did not survive the crash.
The incident occurred off Government Cut, Florida, between Fisher Island and Miami Beach. Neither the names of the other victims or an official cause of death have been released. After Jose’s death was made public, the Miami Marlins released a statement. “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernandez,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
And Jose’s family is going through a lot right now, because it was about to get just a little bigger. Jose and his girlfriend Carla Mendoza were expecting a baby. “I’m so glad you came into my life,” the pitcher captioned a black-and-white Instagram post on Sept. 20, which showed Carla standing on a beach, holding her baby bump. “I’m ready for where this journey is gonna take us together. #familyfirst”
