1. Pottermore has changed a ton since it first launched in 2011.
Originally a beta site, meaning it wasn’t open to the public, Pottermore mainly featured an interaction with the Harry Potter novels. The site went public in 2012, and prior to 2015, visitors created accounts and went through the chapters of each book, taking a sorting quiz to find out which house they belonged in. Users could brew potions, cast spells and win and lose House points to try and earn the House Cup. In Sept. 2015, a newly designed site was launched, and many of the features were removed, but users got to read new content written by Rowling.

2. The Pottermore Sorting Quiz is the site’s most popular feature.
Users love taking this magical version of a personality quiz, which sorts you into one of four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin. Each house attracts a certain type of character, and the quiz is so popular that third-party sites have popped up so fans can take the quiz without registering for Pottermore.
3. The site has published lots of new, exclusive content from Rowling over the years.
J.K. Rowling has released various writings on the site, expanding upon concepts, places, people and objects first introduced in the series. Recently, new writings were published on the site that “explore [the] wizarding schools around the world and the history of magic in North America”. There’s also a new Sorting Ceremony for the North American houses — you can check it all out right here!
4. The launch of Pottermore featured a web-wide scavenger hunt.
As one would expect, Rowling’s announcement of the site was shrouded in mystery. In 2011, HP fansites released coordinates that led to SecretStreetView.com, a site made by Rowling that used Google Maps to uncover letters spelling out “Pottermore”. The site then linked to a YouTube channel with a countdown to the launch of the site. So cool!
5. Like many video games, Pottermore maintains a huge fanbase and sites dedicated to walkthroughs and cheats.
Pottermore’s fandom continues to grow, and fansites have cropped up around the web that can help you find all of the hidden features in the site. It wouldn’t be a Rowling production if fans weren’t encouraged to continue the dialogue outside of the main event, and there are tons of message boards and third-party communities where you can continue talking about Pottermore. The magic never ends!
