Maxwell performed the song as a tribute to the iconic artist, who we TRAGICALLY lost earlier this year due to a drug overdose. We could not have been more thrilled with his selection, as we watched the Brooklyn-based crooner take it away on stage in just the most beautiful way. Maxwell had arguably one of the best performances of the night, when he came out in a sharp looking suit. The last time Maxwell performed at the BET Awards was in 2008 when he sang a rendition of Al Green‘s “Simply Beautiful,” and Made. Our. Hearts. Melt. But we have to say, this performance tops even that. People were standing up dancing and singing along. Wow.

After seeing Maxwell rock the “Purple Rain” artist’s classic ballad, we are SO excited for his forthcoming album, BlackSUMMERS’night, which is sure to be a smash hit when it’s released in July 2016. When Maxwell started out his career, he was originally grouped with the neo-soul movement because of his 1996 hit “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder).” Maxwell’s sound is known for being timeless, with everything from his remake of Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” to his performance of the R.Kelly-written 1999 hit, “Fortunate” that topped the R&B charts. And after taking 10 YEARS OFF from recording, he returned with a No. 1 album AND the Grammy-nominated hit, “Pretty Wings” in 2009. We were so glad to see Maxwell back and better than ever at this year’s BET Awards! We can’t wait for BlackSUMMERS’night!
HollywoodLifers, do you think that Maxwell did the late, great Prince justice with his rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U”?
