1. He’s under the same management as Ariana & Justin Bieber
Who Is Fancy is signed by Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun, who also works with Ariana and Justin Bieber. Scooter has been credited with helping both Justin and Ariana, along with other stars, like Tori Kelly, rise to stardom, and it looks like he’s definitely found another great prospect in this guy!
2. He got the nickname ‘Fancy’ in college
Born Jake Hagood, the 24-year-old moved from Arkansas to Nashville to attend Trevecca Nazarene University after high school. During this time, he worked at Forever 21, where his coworkers nicknamed him “Fancy.” He eventually dropped out of school to work with Scooter and Scott, but the nickname definitely stuck!
3. His first single was released in a viral campaign
Before “Boys Like You,” Fancy released his first song “Goodbye” in Jan. 2015, but did it without revealing his real identity. The music video for the song debuted as a series of videos featuring only lyrics, and the hit instantly began gaining traction — it was viewed more than 4 million times on YouTube! Fancy didn’t show himself until three months later during an April 7 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
4. He’s toured with both Ariana and Meghan
Even though he’s just splashing onto the scene this year, Fancy already has experience with stage presence. He’s played shows opening for both Ariana and Meghan, and with his first album due out in Dec. 2015, we can definitely expect him to be hitting the road again next year.
5. He has a good reason for keeping his identity a secret for so long
There’s a method to the madness! Fancy said he wanted people to “know my art before they knew me,” which is why he decided to hide his face for so many months after putting out his first song. He’s clearly in the spotlight now, though, and we’re totally loving it. How amazing was that DWTS performance!? If you missed it, you can check out “Boys Like You” right HERE!
