‘Resurrection’: Pastor Tom Dies After Shocking Hate Crime — Season 2 Episode 8 Recap
The returned have finally returned after a two-week break and the latest episode is a roller coaster ride from start to finish!
The episode kicks off with poor Lucille (Frances Fisher) struggling to wash the red cross off her front door. And we quickly see that she isn’t the only victim — another woman shows up to Pastor Tom’s (Mark Hildreth) church and tells him that she too had a red cross painted on her door, because her husband is one of the returned. She says her children are so terrified by the vandalism that she doesn’t even want her husband to live in their home anymore, and turns him over to Pastor Tom — ouch!
Margaret Langston (Michelle Fairley) goes to see Addison and tells him that she knows that his grandfather, William Kirk, was one of the people who was killed in the fire at the Langston family factory. In order words, she knows he’s out for revenge. Margaret warns him to stay away from her family and pull out of the deal he made with her son Henry (Kurtwood Smith), which he ultimately does. Wise move — we wouldn’t want to mess with old Mags’ either!
By the time Marty (Omar Epps) goes to see Pastor Tom at the church, at least five more people have been abandoned by their fair-weather families. Everyone is so terrified that they will get the virus or fall victim to the anti-returned rioters that they’re forcing their own flesh and blood out onto the streets — so awful!
Things are pretty tense for the Langston family as well. Lucille tries to make amends with Maggie (Devin Kelley) after flipping out on her now-gone-again mother, Barbara (April Billingsley), but Maggie is in no mood to forgive. She screams at Lucille, who ends up leaving in a huff. Can you really blame Maggie though? After all, she’s dealing with the loss of her beloved mother all over again!
‘Resurrection’: Maggie (Maybe) Finds A Cure For The Virus
Marty goes to see Sheriff Fred (Matt Craven) about the red crosses and says the anti-returned group True Living is probably behind it. Fred promises to get to the bottom of it, but tells Marty he needs to chill out a little bit.
Meanwhile, Dr. Maggie figures out that the reason Rachael (Kathleen Munroe) was able to beat the virus is because she’s pregnant. Maggie asks Rachael if she can take a sample of her amniotic fluid to try to create a cure for the virus and Rachael agrees. After the vist, Rachael and Pastor Tom share a tender pregnancy moment. She tells him that she wants to name the baby Nathaniel and then lets him feel the baby kicking in her stomach.
Fred and Marty learn that the leader of True Living is Jimmy Nolan and they confront him about the red crosses. Jimmy fires back and says the returned are dangerous and unnatural and Marty kind of proves his point by slamming his head on the table and revealing that he is one of the returned. Fred is totally shocked — he had no idea!
Henry goes to see Addison to find out why he backed out of the deal and is shocked to find Grandpa William Kirk there — alive! William insists that his grandson goes through with the deal and they head to the bank to work things out.
Fred receives an anonymous tip that True Living is plotting something terrible so Marty goes to the church to check on everyone.
Meanwhile, Tom’s wife, Janine, comes to Rachael’s door with a packed bag and says her husband wants them to stay at his sister’s house until the True Living madness blows over. But when Tom gets home, he finds a journal Janine has been keeping documenting Rachael’s pregnancy — but she’s talking about the baby as if it were hers! Talk about a Hand That Rocks the Cradle moment! Rachael knows something is fishy so she hides in the bathroom and calls Tom, who tells her that she is definitely in danger with jealous Janine.
Back at the church, Marty and Tom are standing guard when someone suddenly throws tear gas through the window! Marty and Tom run outside to investigate and a car speeds through the parking lot and runs Tom over, killing him! We are still in shock, but we hope that Tom will return and take revenge on the evil True Living group!
