Madison Kills Misty
Okay, so we haven’t actually seen Misty (Lily Rabe) die. But we did see her getting knocked out with a giant brick, then buried alive in some sort of Ninth Ward mausoleum.
The bright (or dark?) side is, Misty got to meet her idol on the day she maybe died — and of course, the very thing she loved the most proved to be her downfall.
See, Fiona (Jessica Lange) was trying to draw out Misty’s Supreme powers, but Misty still wasn’t interested in the heavy crown. So Fiona called up her old friend Stevie — who was rumored to be a witch in the ’70s after her song “Rhiannon” drew suspicion — to convince Misty, AKA her biggest fan. This really annoyed Madison (Emma Roberts), the old maybe-Supreme, who snarkily said to Fiona that she was a fan of Eminem’s. Ha.
Fiona, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga, who didn’t have much to do in this episode), and Nan (Jamie Brewer) all made the mistake of making Madison feel unimportant next to Misty, so Madison — who is a crazy psychopath — took Misty and her new, Stevie-gifted shawl out for a stroll through a local, Treme-esque funeral.
I cannot stress enough how much Emma Roberts killed it (and Misty) in this scene. At this point, I regret saying that Madison should have stayed dead, because if she had we never would have witnessed this ridiculously campy and wonderfully witchy sequence. First Madison asked Misty to enchant two graveyard workers into submission, then she convinced her to drop her shawl into a formerly dead man’s coffin — because Misty the Great Supreme shouldn’t be copying the style of any other witch, even if that witch did happen to be Stevie Nicks.
Now Madison did have a point, here — if her heart murmur is gone and she can bring back the dead, she really might be the next Supreme. But bashing Misty’s head with a giant brick so she fell into an empty coffin that was in the process of being buried wasn’t exactly a display of healthy competition. Madison shut the lid while the formerly dead man wandered off in a haze, then un-enchanted the workers so they would continue to bury the Misty-occupied coffin. She was alive, you guys.
To make matters worse (better, really), Madison stole Stevie’s shawl and did Misty’s (Stevie’s) signature twirl all through the graveyard, as a brass funeral band played on in the distance. It was horrifying, but it was also magical.
Nan Kills Neighbor; Gets Killed By Fiona
Of course, many other bodies dropped this night. Luke or whatever’s mom, Patti LuPone, was still at large next door, having just gotten away with murdering her only son. Nan — whose abilities were also improving — saw the whole thing clairvoyantly, then used her new mind-control trick to force Patti LuPone into drinking bleach. Goodbye, Patti LuPone. You served literally no purpose, but your Broadway voice was oh-so-pretty.
Unfortunately for Nan, no good-ish deed goes unpunished. Much of the episode consisted of Fiona and Marie (Angela Bassett) finally bonding to take down the witch hunters, and part of this bonding consisted of Marie telling Fiona about her immortality trick. Marie had become immortal waaay back in the day, when she gave her baby daughter to the most terrifying looking voodoo-demon I have ever seen (and that’s a lot) in exchange for eternal youth. Since then, Marie had to offer up a baby for him to murder every year, which we saw her (reluctantly) begin to do tonight.
Only when Fiona conjured the same demon, the deal didn’t go through — because unlike Marie back in the day, she already had no soul. Ouch. But the always bright Fiona realized that the soul of an innocent didn’t have to be the soul of a baby, so the youngster Marie snatched from the hospital was spared in favor of the sweet young girl with Down Syndrome. Which was great, because Nan had caught them with the baby and threatened to save it — so it was a “two birds with one stone” type of deal. Marie and Fiona drowned Nan in the bathtub, and we saw her soul enthusiastically go off with the demon, who promised tons of clothes and lots of fun on the other side.
So a happy ending, I guess? Either way, it’s a safe bet that Nan will stay dead now that Misty is (at least temporarily) out of the picture.
At the end of the day, the Coven was one step closer to facing the billionaire witch hunters — who were cursed into financial ruin by Fiona and Marie — and down several members. Madison and Zoe are our only options for Supreme right now, since Queenie, Nan, and Misty are gone, Cordelia is broken, and the rest are too damn old. This is all your fault, Stevie!
What did you think of the episode, HollywoodLifers? Is Misty really dead? Who should be the next Supreme? Shout out your thoughts in the comments!
