‘Devious Maids’ Premiere: Murder Brings A Mysterious Stranger To Town

Murder! Mayhem! Mops! Lifetime's new prime-time soap is more than just your average guilty pleasure. Those hoping Marc Cherry's Devious Maids would indeed be the second coming of Desperate Housewives should be pretty pleased with themselves after the show's June 23 series premiere. The man who pulled the strings on Wisteria Lane, along with co-executive producer Eva Longoria, have truly crafted the perfect summer mystery drama -- as bitingly funny as it is dangerously addictive.

Marisol (Ana Ortiz) is the new maid in town, having just taken a job with the Stappords. But the real fun begins when she also volunteers to assist the Powells, whose maid Flora was brutally murdered within the first five minutes of the pilot. And because this is a Marc Cherry creation, Marisol has a mysterious connection to the late-great Flora — but, of course, we don’t find that out until the end of the episode.

It turns out Marisol’s son is the waiter who stands accused of Flora’s murder! A nasty little chat over breakfast revealed the Powells believe there’s a much more sinister killer out there, but because it would draw too much attention to them, they’ve decided to do “less than nothing.”

I have to say, I’m already really digging this mystery. By the time we got the big payoff at the end of the episode, I was dying to know what was really going on with Marisol. And the fact that we already got such a big reveal in the first hour makes me think there’s a season full of even-more-satisfying surprises to come.

Carmen Aims High, Odessa Falls Flat

Carmen (Roselyn Sanchez) is a struggling musician, desperate for her big break; so like any devious maid would, she scores a job working for Latin singing sensation Alejandro Rubio! His Russian ‘bulldog’ Odessa thwarts Carmen’s every effort to play her music for Alejandro, but fate eventally intervenes, sending Odessa down a flight of stairs — without her fake leg! It was like watching Heather Mills on Dancing with the Stars, only way more tragic. And hilarious.

Everything’s (Finally) Coming Up Rosie

You’ve got to feel for poor Rosie (Dania Ramirez). Her ‘famous’ employer Peri couldn’t care less that her son is unable to emigrate from Guadalajara; instead, she forces Rosie to watch her son, while she takes all the credit for flawlessly juggling motherhood and her burgeoning film career. But because Rosie is among the devious crowd, she’s able to use Peri’s vanity to turn the tables!

Forbidden Romance, Anyone?

The show’s first love story comes courtesy of Valentina (Edy Ganem), who’s head-over-heels in love with her employer’s son Remi (Pretty Little Liars‘ Drew Van Acker.) And even though he seems interested in Valentina — or, at least, interested in what she flaunts by the pool — her mother Zoila (Judy Reyes), who also works for Remi’s mother, puts the kibosh on her dreams of marrying up… or so she thinks.

(Side note: Susan Lucci as Remi’s mother is inspired casting. She may have spent more than 30 years as über-dramatic Erica Kane, but her role on Devious Maids really let her flex her comedic muscles — and I want more!)
