Matthew Warren’s Autopsy Released

The report says that Matthew died around 10 A.M. at his home in Mission Viejo, Calif., and that the cause of death was suicide.

Matthew’s father is Rick Warren, the author of The Purpose Driven Life, and he was the one who delivered the invocation at President Obama‘s first inauguration in 2009.

The pastor wrote a letter about his son and described him as: “incredibly kind, gentle, and compassionate man. He had a brilliant intellect and a gift for sensing who was most in pain or most uncomfortable in a room.”

He went on to say that his son had a history of struggling with mental illness, depression, and suicidal thoughts throughout his life.

“In spite of America’s best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing,” Rick said. “The torture of mental illness never subsided.”

It’s unclear as to when the family will hold the funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we know they are struggling right now.

Saddleback Church, where Rick was the pastor, released a heartfelt statement about the tragic death.

“At 27 years of age, Matthew was an incredibly kind, gentle and compassionate young man whose sweet spirit was encouragement and comfort to many,” the church said. “Unfortunately, he also suffered from mental illness resulting in deep depression and suicidal thoughts.”
