āThe idea was based on this experience I had with someone who was kind of this unreliable guy. You never know when heās going to leave, you never know when heās going to come back, but he always does come back. My visual for this song is, thereās a guy on his knees sitting on the ground outside of a door. And on the other side of the door is his girlfriend, who he keeps on leaving, and he keeps coming back to her, but then he leaves again. Heās saying, āThis is the last time Iām going to do this to you.ā And sheās saying, āThis is the last time Iām asking you this: Donāt do this again.ā And sheās wondering whether to let him in, and he just wants her to give him another chance, but she doesnāt know if heās going to break her heart again. Itās a really fragile emotion youāre dealing with when you want to love someone, but you donāt know if itās smart to,ā Taylor told NPR.
Vulture explains the meaning behind āThe Last Timeā as having a hidden message with the lyric, āL.A. ON YOUR BREAK.ā The site goes on to explain saying, āWho takes breaks? Actors take breaks from movies (Gyllenhaal, Taylor Lautner); musicians take breaks from tours or recording (John Mayer); high-schoolers take breaks from Deerfield. But since L.A. does not really seem like a Kennedy vacation spot, this one goes in the Gyllenhaal column because of the protracted breakup references.ā
Note to Taylor ā If Jake Gyllenhaal knocks at your door, asking for a second chance, you let him in! But thatās just my opinion.
With Taylor and Vultureās explanations combined, āThe Last Timeā sounds like it may be about Jake. What do you think, HollywoodLifers?
