You’ve never EVER looked better or more fit!
For anyone who hasn’t been eating their vegetables or working out regularly, like First Lady Michelle who launched her “Let’s Move” campaign, she was a walking advertisement to get started.
But looking fabulous was just Michelle’s warm up. Once the First Lady got started, she launched right in to making points that matter to millions of American women.
She reminded us that her husband signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help women get equal pay for equal work. Today, women still only make 77 cents for every dollar that men earn.
She touted his national health care plan. “When it comes to the health of our families, Barack refused to listen to all those folks who told him to leave health reform for another day, another president,” she said. He did it, she explained, because he believes “our kids should be able to see a doctor when they’re sick… and no one in this country should ever go broke because of an accident or illness.”
As a mom, I couldn’t agree with her more.
Having had two daughters fight life-threatening illnesses — one was stricken with a brain tumor; the other leukemia — I can tell you that fighting insurance companies to cover the bills is almost as terrible as fighting the disease.
WOMEN CAN MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR HEALTHCARE
And then Michelle bravely went right on to say what many women have been waiting to hear in this presidential campaign: “He believes that women are more than capable of making our own choices about our bodies and healthcare… that’s what my husband stands for.”
And what a relief after Republican Congressman Todd Akin‘s comments on “legitimate” rape and Vice-Presidential nominee Paul Ryan‘s view that abortion should be illegal, even in cases of rape or incest.
And then Michelle pointed out how much she and the President are just like us. “When we first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were higher than our mortgage,” she explained. “We were so young, so in love and so in debt.”
Been there, done that. But that’s why she pointed out that her husband has fought so hard to increase student aid and to keep interest rates down, “so every young person can fulfill their promise and be able to attend college without a mountain of debt.”
Yes, that’s so important. Very few people can totally “build it” alone, if they don’t have parents well-off enough to pay for a college education, and with rolodexes full of business contacts. Most young people need some help to get started building successful lives.
EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE A RIGHT TO MARRY
Then Michelle threw her support behind gay marriage. “And if proud Americans can be who they are and boldly stand at the altar with who they love… then surely, surely we can give everyone in this country a fair chance at that great American Dream.”
It was another courageous first for a First Lady who has warmly embraced and supported military families and who has always said that her most important job is mom-in-chief!
Thanks Michelle, for being such a modern, inspiring role model for so many American women!
