Everyone loved it when he called her “señorita,” but Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s romance ultimately didn’t last. The couple — whose relationship quickly made headlines in 2019 — called it quits for good after they briefly reunited in 2023.

In November 2021, the pair released their own statement via their respective Instagram Stories, insisting that their breakup was amicable.
“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” the former Fifth Harmony member and the “Stitches” artist explained. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends.”
Both Shawn and Camila later opened up about their difficult split. Shawn explained in an Instagram video that he had to grapple with the aftermath of their breakup.

And that sometimes means not having your number one focus be your career. And that’s OK.”
In early 2023, though, the former pair briefly reunited. They were spotted getting close at Coachella in April 2023, then hanging out together. However, they split for good shortly thereafter.
In March 2024, Camila explained the reason why she and Shawn decided to go their separate ways during her “Call Her Daddy” interview.
“Luckily, I was in a place in my life where it took me less time to realize that. It took us both less time to be like, ‘This doesn’t feel right, and we really don’t need to try so hard to make it work,’” Camila said, referring to her brief reconciliation with Shawn. “‘It’s all good. This is not feeling good. Let’s be friends. I love you, it’s all good let’s move on, you go do your thing … become the person that you’re becoming, and I’ll root for you.'”
She then pointed out, “I will always care about him and love him. He’s such a good person, and I’m lucky because some people have exes that are awful, and he is not. He’s a really kind, good person.”

In one post, she wrote about experiencing a full year of seasons as she reflected on entering 2024. “i’ve gone through winters and summers this year . and spring visited me when i learned to let go. sometimes these things happened all in one day,” she wrote.
In another post, she was wearing a t-shirt that said “GRWM [get ready with me] to bewitch his body and soul.” In the comments, many fans wondered if she was hinting at an upcoming album in the new year.
