Ariana Grande came very, very close to marrying Pete Davidson – she even sang about it in “thank u, next” – so did Pete, 27, feel bitter and heartbroken after Ariana, 27, revealed that she and Dalton Gomez are engaged after less than a year of dating? Actually, no. The Saturday Night Live funnyman, who has been open about his brief 2018 engagement with the singer, wishes her “the best,” a source close to Pete tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY. “He’s really happy for her.”
“From what he can tell, Dalton treats Ariana with total respect and like she deserves to be treated,” the insider tells HollywoodLife. Pete and Ariana’s relationship went from dating to engage to broken up in the span of five months in 2018. Since then, he’s made peace with the failed relationship. “He’s happy for the time they spent together but also knows they’ve both moved on. He’s glad she’s happy and congratulates her on the next chapter.”
Pete, a second source tells HollywoodLife EXCLUSIVELY, knows that they “had an amazing moment together, [one] filled with so much love,” but that moment has passed. So, instead of holding on to resentment, he decided to let go. “Pete knows that he will be connected to Ariana forever,” the second insider tells HollywoodLife, “but he is happy to see that she is able to move on, just as much as he has. He is very happy for her and only wishes her the best.”
Ariana revealed she and Dalton, 25, were engaged in a Dec. 20 Instagram post. “Forever n then some,” she captioned the gallery, which included a few shots of her massive engagement ring. This engagement comes about nine months after fans first noticed a “mystery man” in the background of some of her Instagram Stories. Shortly afterward, she confirmed that she and Dalton were an item by featuring him in the video for “Stuck With U,” her COVID-inspired collab with Justin Bieber.
Less than a week before Ariana’s announcement, Pete Davidson poked fun at his 2018 engagement while interacting with fans outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Before shooting an episode of Saturday Night Live, Pete met a few SNL fans, one who said her name was “Arianna” too. “Oh! Well, hello. Let’s get married,” he joked before walking away. While some online critics interpreted this remark as shade, a source close to Pete told HollywoodLife that “there was never any [harm] meant towards Ariana whatsoever.”
