Nash Grier is the Vine star who used a homophobic slur — and violently — in a video recorded in April which has just resurfaced. Read on for 5 things to know about the teen who is now facing the full, righteous fury of the internet.

Nash Grier, 16, has earned the full ire of the internet after a Vine he had recorded in April and subsequently taken down has resurfaced. In it, he can be found yelling a violent, homophobic slur in response to a commercial about HIV. Read on for 5 things to know about the North Carolina teen whose apology may not be enough.

1. Nash Is Just 16 Years Old

Born December 28, 1997, Hamilton Nash Grier is just 16 years old. His grievous error can be chalked up to being so young, but he’s not so young that he doesn’t know that that word is not acceptable, at all. Ever.

2. Nash Is The Most Followed Person On Vine

With 8.7 million followers, Nash is the most followed person on Vine. Combined with his friend and frequent collaborator, Cameron Dallas, the two share approximately 13.7 million Vine followers between them. That is a lot of influence for a teenager to have — too much, really, considering Nash’s choice to post the homophobic Vine.

The rest of his social media following isn’t too shabby, either — 5.8 million on Instagram, and 2.71 on Twitter. Behold the almighty power of adolescents.

3. Nash Will Be On A Movie (Or TV?) Screen Near You

In May, Nash and Cameron signed a deal with AwesomenessTV for an upcoming film, according to The Daily Dot. Few details are known at this point — including whether it will be on movie or TV screens — but what we do know is that AwesomenessTV was acquired by DreamWorks in May 2013. Many of DreamWorks’ films are marketed and distributed by Walt Disney Studios, and we have a feeling that they don’t take too kindly to scandals such as these.

4. This Isn’t The First Time Nash Has Featured In Mainstream Media

The media attention that Nash is featuring this time around is certainly not positive, but this isn’t the first time that mainstream media has taken notice. Other than the coverage that Nash and Cameron received for their AwesomenessTV deal, Nash has appeared on Good Morning America twice. Not too bad for a teenager who made himself famous on social media for 6-second videos.

5. Here Is The Vine — Given How Shocking It Is, Do You Accept His Subsequent Apology?

Here is the Vine, originally posted in April, which Nash took down:

And here is Nash’s apology, made July 6:

Nash may be just 16 years old, but that is surely old enough to not only understand that that word is rooted in hatred and social discrimination, and that he needs to face the consequences. Is his Twitter apology enough? Let us know, HollywoodLifers.

Nash has aged since that video. He is not the only comer that has used a “homophobic slur”. It’s not like there are few and far between of these viners that make fun of the campaign for equality. If you want to judge nash then go ahead but you can’t tell me that you can look at his eyes and say he’s a monster for saying something stupid one time.

His apology was obviously sincere. The vine he made was not to impose rude intensions on gays. He was simply posting a careless vine and didn’t think of how other people would take it. Give him a break, it may not have been the brightest thing to post but hey, we all make mistakes. Just drop it, he’s not doing any harm. He’s just being a kid.

Nash is going to have show people he changed and has become educated on HIV transmission and it is not only a “fag” disease like he said. Just like Justin Bieber learned that even joking around about racism is never acceptable, Nash has to learn the hard way like Justin did, in Nash’s case homophobia is never acceptable. Justin is still getting flack about things he sang about jokingly 6 years later, so Nash will have this hanging over his head for years to come as well.

difference is Justin Bieber made offensive jokes, but he’s not a racist. He was just immature, on the other hand Nash IS clearly an homophobe. CLEARLY. Pretending to change your mind to save your reputation and image is not a good thing.

I love how DND is on at nearly 11am!
The “I was in a bad place” didn’t really add to the sincerity of the apology. Tbh, the only way of making him (and anyone gullible enough to absorb to that video) learn from this is to unfollow him. There’s enough brat-like “stars” out there without any particular talent, do we really need more who are ignorant fuelling further ignorance?

These points are irrelevant. This vine was made over a year ago, when he was 15 and had few followers. He wasn’t an influence to anyone at the time. What he said still isn’t acceptible but it’s not like he was anyone important at the time.

Justin Bieber wasn’t the big star he is today when he sang those racist songs at age 14 either, yet people still think he should be held accountable til this day for what he did 6 years ago as a very young teenage boy. Nash has to show people he changed or there will be further consequences down the road for his career. Nash also had racist, sexist and even more homophobic videos out there yet to be brought into the limelight.

Yes, he should’ve known that word is not okay to say but he’s still just a teenager. He’s learning from his mistakes. At least he took the video down and apologized. We all do stupid things we regret.

I doubt he’s learning from his mistakes, his mind is made up about gay people and gay rights. He’s proven it time and again, pretending to change quickly to save your ass adds insult to injury. He’s a “religious nut” biggot and girls with a brain will have to realise this and let him go despite the fact they find him “cute”.
