A rom-com with Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher? Sign us up! Reese, 46, and Ashton, 44, star in Netflix’s pre-Valentine’s Day movie Your Place or Mine, directed by Aline Brosh McKenna. They play a pair of best friends who live on opposite coasts and decide to switch lives for a week, which could reignite their past romance.

Where and When To Watch

Your Place or Mine will be released Friday, February 10 on Netflix. The release date was announced by Reese and Ashton during Netflix’s TUDUM event in September 2022. They recorded a video teasing the film and engaged in some playful jokes. Ashton told Reese that she was his top choice to make a rom-com with. “Ashton, that is so sweet. That is literally the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me,” The Morning Show star said.

The Trailer

Netflix released the official trailer for Your Place or Mine on January 12. It starts with Reese’s character, Debbie, and Ashton’s character, Peter, reminiscing on their 20-year friendship over Zoom. Peter eventually has the idea that he and Debbie should switch lives for a week. Peter moves to Los Angeles to watch Debbie’s son Jack, while Debbie flies to New York City and explores the dating scene. After Debbie meets a handsome man, she tells Peter who gets jealous and realizes he’s had feelings for Debbie all this time. The question is: does Debbie feel the same?

Reese signed onto Your Place or Mine back in May 2020. Ashton was announced as Reese’s co-star over a year later. He told PEOPLE that joining the film was an “easy” decision because he wanted to work with Reese and the director Aline Brosh McKenna. Ashton also confirmed that he had a blast with Reese on the set. “We just had fun! I can talk to Reese about anything — acting, business, kids, media, football. She’s always game,” the That ’90s Show star said.

Reese told PEOPLE how much she loved working with Ashton. “I think he’s so funny. We have a very similar sense of humor and timing,” the Academy Award winner said.

Jesse Williams stars in the film as Theo, who Reese falls for when she moves to NYC. Jimmy Kimmel‘s nephew, Wesley Kimmel, plays Reese’s on-screen son Jack. Rachel Bloom, Tig Notaro, Steve Zahn, Zoe Chao, Griffin Matthews, Shiri Appleby, and Vella Lovell also star.

Crew

Aline Brosh McKenna makes her directorial debut with Your Place or Mine. She wrote the films The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses and co-created the TV series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Aline produced Your Place or Mine with Reese, under her company Hello Sunshine, as well as Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Lauren Neustadter.

 Plot Information

Netflix’s brief synopsis for the rom-com reads, “Two long-distance best friends change each other’s lives when she decides to pursue a lifelong dream and he volunteers to keep an eye on her teenage son.”

In the PEOPLE interview, Reese shared that Your Place or Mine is “kind of a love letter to single moms everywhere.” She said, “Even if your life didn’t perfectly work out the way you envisioned, there’s hope and there’s joy, and love can still be found.”

Aline Brosh McKenna told PEOPLE that a real-life experience that she had loosely inspired the events of the rom-com. “It’s about love and getting out of your own way to find love and having the courage to take the leap to find it, and it’s meant to be written about people who have lived some and know who they are,” Aline explained. “And [about] that chance that they’re taking to bridge the gap with each other and how they’re going to do that, given all the things they’ve undergone in the years since they’ve first met.”
