Buzz Aldrin is one of the most famous astronauts of all time, in part because he was one of the first people to go to the moon. He was part of the 1969 Apollo 11 NASA mission, where he, along with Neil Armstrong were the first people to set foot on the moon. Buzz, 93, has been one of the most celebrated scientists and astronauts of all time.
Throughout his life, Buzz has been married four times. He most recently announced that he had wed his fourth wife Anca Faur on his 93rd birthday on January 20, 2023. Find out everything that you need to know about the four women that Buzz has been married to.
Buzz announced that he and Anca had eloped in a tweet. He said that the pair were very excited about the surprise. “On my 93rd birthday & the day I will also be honored by Living Legends of Aviation I am pleased to announce that my longtime love Dr. Anca Faur & I have tied the knot.We were joined in holy matrimony in a small private ceremony in Los Angeles & are as excited as eloping teenagers,” he wrote.
Like Buzz, Anca is also a scientist with many of her own accomplishments under her belt! While her new husband has a doctoral degree in astronautics, Anca is actually a chemical engineering Ph.D. She studied at the University of Pittsburgh, per her LinkedIn. She worked at Johnson Matthey and the California Hydrogen Business Council, before she started working at Buzz Aldrin Ventures in 2019.
Lois Driggs Cannon
Buzz married his third wife Lois Driggs Cannon on Valentine’s Day in 1988. The pair had an out-of-this-world proposal story, where the astronaut had joked about using a moon rock to pop the question to Lois, but apparently it caused issues between the government and Buzz, according to Vanity Fair. When the ring had a more conventional diamond ring, Lois still had a perfect response to the questions about the rock’s origin. “I tell them the moon is really made of diamonds,” she told People in 1989. “And we like to look up at the stars.”
Throughout their marriage, the couple started a new company, along with Lois’ daughter, called Star Buzz, which managed his public image. The pair were wed until 2012, when the astronaut filed for divorce. After the split, the pair were involved in a legal battle over Star Buzz, according to ABC News. Lois sadly passed away in July 2018.
Beverly Van Zile
Barring his new marriage to Anca, Buzz’s second marriage was also his shortest! He tied the knot to his second wife Beverly Van Zile on New Year’s Eve in 1975. Early in their relationship, Buzz and Beverly appeared together on the couple’s game show Tattletales in 1975, per IMDb. The pair split up in 1978.
Joan Ann Archer
When Buzz made his famous trip to the moon, becoming the second person to walk on it, he was married to his first wife Joan Ann Archer. The couple got married 15 years before the famed voyage in 1954. They had three children James, Janice, and Andrew. After her husband made the first trip to the moon, Joan was very open about how difficult it was to adjust to his newfound stardom. “I had married an engineer and here he was a hero,” she told the Los Angeles Times in an interview in the 70s. “This was disturbing but I didn’t understand and my immediate reaction was anger toward Buzz. I did realize I should have expected it.”
The couple divorced in 1974, five years after the Apollo 11 Mission. Joan passed away in July 2015 at 84-years-old, Buzz shared a few photos of his late ex after her passing on his Twitter, paying tribute to her. He honored her with a statement to the LA Times. “The future will recall Joan Archer Aldrin as a soft-spoken wife and mother, raising three well-behaved, individual-minded children and dealing with both our … tribulations with a most admired human acceptance,” he said.Click to Subscribe to Get Our Free HollywoodLife Daily Newsletter to get the hottest celeb news.
