A Sex & The City revival is reportedly moving ahead without actress Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, a new report from Page Six details. The iconic series will return for a limited series order at HBO Max and will star Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes, and Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, per an industry insider who spoke to the outlet. HollywoodLife reached out to HBO Max and Kim Cattrall’s rep for comment, but did not hear back as of press time.
Once the report began to circulate, fans of Kim Cattrall began calling out the move on social media. “Kim Cattrall playing Samantha is the only reason to watch [Sex & The City],” one fan shared on Twitter. “There is no Sex and the City without [Kim Cattrall]. Don’t get it twisted,” another fan said on the social media platform.
But the news comes after Kim appeared on the December 22 episode of Women’s Prize for Fiction podcast, where she reiterated why she never intended to return for a third film after Sex & The City 2 came out in 2010. “I remember getting a lot of grief on social media for not wanting to do a film. It was astonishing some of the things people wrote to me — ‘I work in a bank and I don’t like this person and I don’t like the hours, but I do it. So you just do it!'” Kim revealed. “Give me what I want. I do it. I’m miserable, you be miserable too.”
Kim also said that she is incredibly “lucky” to have the choice of what projects she can choose to do, and that is something incredibly sacred to her as she pursues more roles that align with her career goals. “It’s something I feel very lucky to have and I’m very protective of it. I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.”
Kim played New York City PR representative Samantha Jones from 1998 to 2004 on the HBO series, which is available to watch with an HBO Max subscription. She earned five Emmy nominations for her work and won a Golden Globe in 2003 for her performance. The actress returned for the Sex & The City movie in 2008 and its sequel in 2010. Although there were initially plans for a third installment, Kim’s longstanding tension with actress Sarah Jessica Parker was part of the reason she did not want to return.
