It’s almost harder to prepare for this seemingly “relaxed” encounter compared to meeting the parents, because it offers up more leeway with your outfit. So, what should you wear?
Emily Holmes Hahn, founder of LastFirst, offered up tips on putting together the perfect casual outfit. Whether you’re meeting at happy hour or just grabbing drinks at a bar, keep it effortless and cool. “Try something sexy but casual. Trendy, flattering jeans and a fitted tshirt would be perfect. A low wedge sandal or slide on sneaker can add a pop of color and finish the look nicely,” she said.
If you’re meeting over dinner, Emily recommends seizing the opportunity to show off a more polished, dressed-up get-up. “This is an opportunity to dress up a little more. A patterned dress or skirt and sleeveless top, with peep toe heels and a pretty clutch. It’s not good to be too revealing at a dinner with friends, but definitely do showcase your favorite body part for your SO to notice. You could do this with a shorter hemline, lower neckline or tasteful peep of tummy. Then keep the rest of your look more covered,” she said.
Once you have your outfit planned out, remember to be present and seize the opportunity to get to know the people your significant other calls friends — their stamp of approval is obviously an important one.
