The king of skateboarding, Tony Hawk, 48, paid his respects to Dylan Rieder with a very heartfelt message on Oct. 13, remembering his accomplishments and zest for life. He took to Instagram, “Thank you for making skateboarding so much better while you were here, Dylan.” This comes only one day after the sad news surfaced, revealing that the 28-year-old skateboarding star and model lost his life after a grueling two-year battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Tony also shared a video of the late star, showing his serious shredding skills. “Skating like this can’t be taught; it is a product of passion, dedication and innate style. Dylan Rieder had all that and more. Do an impossible in his honor today while wishing you could do it like this.”
Luckily, one of Joe’s family members was there by his side during his struggle with the debilitating disease. He revealed to us EXCLUSIVELY, “Dylan [Rieder] was battling leukemia for two years, and his body actually responded well to ‘sister cell’ treatment that he received at the City of Hope Hospital for acute lymphocytic leukemia,” he explained. “Dylan had an amazing medical staff there. He had been through a lot over the past couple of years fighting the disease and finally passed away peacefully on Wednesday.” Our hearts our broken.
Dylan first hopped on a skateboard at just nine years old, quickly learning to navigate it with skill and agility, eventually going pro for Alien Workshop by 18. Since the sad news broke, other skateboarders and stars have also come forward to mourn his death like Ryan Sheckler, Danny Way, Jaggy Eaton and Sharon Osbourne. Even his former modeling colleague, Cara Delevingne voiced her sadness over his untimely death. She wrote in a sweet Twitter post, “One of the kindest, most down to down, incredible human beings I have ever encountered.”
