In the video Korryn Gaines, 23, posted to Instagram on Aug. 1, not long before she was shot to death by police, the young mom can be heard talking to her 5-year-old son. Korryn asks the boy who is outside, and he replies, “the police.” As officers can be heard in the background, Korryn asks her son another question, “and what are they trying to do?” He says, “they’re trying to kill us.” Finally she asks if he wants to go out there and he says “no.”
In a second video Korryn took, a SWAT officer is shown outside her door. It is not clear at what point during the incident the video was recorded. But wow, this is certainly some heavy stuff — especially for a five-year-old boy to witness. And while Korryn’s son did end up getting shot during this incident, we are so glad that he reportedly is going to be ok, according to NBC.

However Korryn was not as lucky, as she was killed during the confrontation. The hours-long standout, which occurred at a Maryland apartment, ended in an exchange of gunfire between her and the police — with Korryn reportedly firing first. Authorities said Korryn had actually barricaded herself in the apartment and repeatedly threatened Baltimore County Police officers with a long gun.

Since the tragic incident, another video has surfaced of Korryn and her son from back in March. In the clip, Korryn tells her son to film her during a traffic stop. “They’re going to try and fight me,” she tells her son in the video. And while that’s all the video shows, it’s pretty clear that Korryn did not trust police, which could have been why she aimed a gun at the police officers who knocked on her door on Aug. 1.
The officers intended to serve arrest warrants on Korryn and a man as she was wanted on a bench warrant for failing to appear in court on charges related to previous cases of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest following a traffic stop in March. It’s too bad that something like this had to end in a death. Our thoughts are with Korryn’s friends and family during this difficult time.
