Met Gala Theme 2015, ‘China: Through The Looking Glass’ Dresses — Celebs That Dressed The Part:
Rihanna, 27, is the one who really spoke to the theme — and in such a beautiful way. You couldn’t miss her canary yellow gown complete with a huge train, baroque-style embroidery and tons of fur trimming.
Not only did she make a dramatic entrance, but we can’t ignore that Rihanna is the ONLY celeb who wore a Chinese couture designer, selecting a gown by Guo Pei. Whether you think her elaborate robe is big fashion or just Big Bird is up to you, but Ri deserves some credit for supporting a Chinese designer and honoring the “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme perfectly.
Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga & Others Sport Chinese-Inspired Gowns
It was pretty easy to tell which celebs totally ignored the theme and just did their own thing — which always happens — but there were a few other winners! Intricate prints and rich jewel tones such as red and green dominated, but a select few really brought the house down while aligning with the theme.
Selena Gomez paired her custom Vera Wang gown with a beautiful flower crown and China-doll red lip. Another subtle detail, (the black tassels on the straps of her dress), evoked classic Chinese culture in a tasteful way.
Lady Gaga looked like royalty when she swept the carpet in a Balenciaga kimono-style design, complete with a crown. Though kimonos are actually a staple of Japanese culture, at the end of the day, Gaga successfully let off Eastern vibes, so we’ll let it slide.
Rita Ora stunned in a scarlet Tom Ford satin dress. It echoed a traditional Cheongsam gown with its high neckline, and though the necktie skewed a bit towards Little Red Riding Hood, Rita gets points for authenticity with the rest of the design.
Want a piece of the action? You can view the China: Through the Looking Glass exhibit starting May 7 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.
