Derek Puts His Career First — Again
We all know Derek is a huge family man, but the competition with his sister Amelia has been intense. It quickly took a dark turn when Amelia was preparing for a surgery, but was confronted head-on by her dark past.
The patient she was scheduled to operate on just so happened to have a daughter who knew Amelia from Narcotics Anonymous. The daughter didn’t keep Amelia’s secret anonymous when she screamed to the entire trauma floor that she wanted a new doctor. Why? Well, she continued yelling that Amelia was a drug addict who had killed her own boyfriend via overdose.
That’s when Derek stepped in and took over the case, leaving his baby sister embarrassed in front of most the hospital. Soon the entire staff began to whisper about her. Poor Amelia couldn’t break away from her ugly past after all.
“I thought I could get away from it. That I had a chance. But you never get away from it,” she confided to Dr. Webber.
Derek finally swallowed his pride and admitted to Amelia that he didn’t stand up to Chief Hunt (Kevin McKidd) for her and that now he thinks there will be an emergency board meeting and it’s his fault — which clearly it was. He confesses that he wasn’t thinking about just her career, but about himself.
Amelia becomes hysterical and lashes out at Derek, “You’re my brother…how could you do this to me?” Derek, realizing that he’s been a family turncoat, vows that he would handle the situation and make it better.
Chief Hunt Has To Do What’s Best For The Hospital
Everyone knows Dr. Hunt is a great chief, but he also knows Amelia’s secrets now. He tries to confront her and give her a chance to explain her side of the story, but she shoots him down, leaving him to take matters into his own hands.
Owen then seeks out Derek and asks if Amelia is really the best person to head the department, but Derek is speechless and can’t man up and stick up for Amelia. Ouch Derek.
When it’s time for the emergency board meeting, things aren’t looking good for baby Shepherd. But Derek rushes in and tries to save her career and tells the board Amelia is right the job.
“This hospital should of protected her. This woman should of protected her and more importantly I should of protected her. I didn’t and I didn’t because I wanted her job. I wanted my old job back…so now we’re here…my fault.”
There’s the Derek we love!
Arizona Had Tough Decisions to Make
In other Grey’s action, Dr. Nicole Herman (Geena Davis) is nowhere to be found a serious pediatric surgical case is thrust into Arizona’s hands and she has to act fast to save a baby. But she is uneasy about proceeding without her missing boss.
Left to her own devices, Arizona has to perform the surgery sans Dr. Herman, but with the help of Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers). Although Dr. Karev was able to save the baby, Arizona didn’t have the same outcome with the mother, leaving everyone wondering, where the heck was Dr. Herman?
When Arizona finally runs into Dr. Herman, she unleashes her anger. But then she witnesses her boss throwing up after just having a very aggressive chemo treatment. Now, Arizona’s good heart gets the best of her and she backs down. She asks to continue her fellowship under Dr. Herman, without involving Chief Hunt.
Derek Finally Hits Rock Bottom
Of course, we had to wait until the end of the episode to see Derek have a complete meltdown at home. As soon as Amelia walks through the door, he lets loose emotionally.
“I’ve always wanted to protect you since dad died…I promised,” he says. “And then you came up here and I realized you were more than fine.”
But he didn’t stop there. He confessed to what we’ve all been witnessing, “I don’t know who I am anymore. I tried to make the right choices…and I’m miserable and I don’t know what to do with it. All’s I do is hurt people…I just can’t get control of it.”
‘Your Husband Picked You Up And Jumped Out A Window With You’
Amongst the chaos, there were some intimate moments during this episode. The husband and wife patients who jumped out of a burning building together survived because the husband acted as a human trampoline. Talk about real love!
April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) cuddled and discussed their worries about the baby in an intimate scene.
Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) got some one on one time, and connected in the on-call room. And during this cute moment, Meredith asks her to hang out — finally, some sisterly love!
What do you think, HollywoodLifers, was Derek out of line? Do you think Derek needs therapy? Will Arizona keep her word and not tell Chief Hunt? Let us know.
