I was the first to tell the “Best New Artist” winner that Justin Bieber’s fans were attacking her Wikipedia page… how did she react?
When Esperanza Spalding won Best New Artist there was a collective gasp and “WHAT!?” in the Grammys press room (followed by some mean-spirited laughter directed at favored-to-win Justin Bieber). After that, frenzied action ensued. The woman running the press room ran around saying Esperanza would be coming back soon to speak to us. She printed “cheat sheets” entitled “Who is Esperanza Spalding” with facts about the beautiful artist. The jazz bassist was the only musician of the night for whom a “cheat sheet” was given.
We were incredibly shocked when Justin didn’t take home a Grammy, but we’re so proud of him for being a gentleman and introducing himself to Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding!
You might believe Justin Bieber was robbed at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 13, but he couldn’t have been more gracious! Justin was nominated in two categories at the Grammys, and we were sure he’d take home the award for Best New Artist, but jazz chanteuse Esperanza Spalding blindsided us all by winning instead! Even though Justin was visibly upset and even admitted it to MTV backstage, he decided to track Esperanza down and congratulate her!

Justin Bieber brought down the house at the 53rd Grammy Awards on Feb. 13 with a bonkers live performance! But it didn’t help him bring home the Best New Artist statue, which went to relative unknown Esperanza Spalding!
The fun started with a video of Justin’s first meeting with Usher four years ago, followed by a brief onstage dialogue between Usher and El Biebz. From there, Justin gave us a brief acoustic taste of “Baby,” followed by a crazy drum interlude. He then channeled Michael Jackson through dance moves in a high-energy rendition of “Never Say Never.” Jaden Smith even stopped by to drop his pint-sized verse!
