John performed a few songs on the ‘Today’ show on July 5, including his new single, ‘Paper Doll.’ The song has been rumored to be about Taylor Swift, and before his performance he was confronted about it. So are the rumors really true?

Notorious heartbreaker John Mayer, 35, may have been the target of a Taylor Swift song, but rumors are swirling that his latest single, “Paper Doll,” is his chance to call her out. He was asked about whether the song really is directed at Taylor, 23, when he performed on the Today show July 5, and he didn’t exactly deny it!

John Mayer Confronts Taylor Swift Rumors

While fans may be excited about John’s upcoming album, which will hit stores August 20, they might be a little more excited about his latest song, “Paper Doll” for the time being — especially if there is more to the lyrics than meets the ear.

It has been rumored that “Paper Doll” is about Taylor, and when he was asked about if the rumors are true or false before he performed the song, he didn’t say false! “Songwriters write songs because of people, about people,” he said. “Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song; I don’t get involved in it. It’s none of my business.”

Whatever that means! John’s definitely being coy, and his lack of a denial sure seems closer to a confirmation that Taylor was his songwriting target.

John Mayer’s ‘Paper Doll’ Lyrics Lead To Speculation

After Taylor’s “Dear John” left him “humiliated,” as he told Rolling Stone in 2012, he may have fired back with his own song! The chorus seemingly makes reference to her song, “22”: “You’re like 22 girls in one / And none of them know what they’re running from / Was it just too far to fall for a little paper doll?”

He also sings a lyric in “Paper Doll” that says, “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky,” which matches her “Dear John” lyrics, “You paint me a blue sky and go back and turn it to rain.”

The references are subtle, but definitely questionable, and John’s answer to the burning question on Today didn’t convince us at all that the song isn’t about Taylor!

What do YOU think of John’s answer, HollywoodLifers? Did he confirm or deny that his song is about Taylor?

I think Taylor Swift needs to find her a big black buck. If she writes these petty songs about John Mayer, could you imagine what kinda songs she’d write if she was enjoying 11 inches of black fury? That’s even if she could get her head on straight. I know, I o this to white chicks all the time.

Ah! Is clear as water that the song is about Taylor. But, come on! The song is so sweet and cute. If I were Taylor, I would be happy with Paper Dolls. It means that John still thinks about me. :) My dream is to see them back together!

Everyone keeps saying John got his revenge and that Taylor is finally getting a taste of her own medicine but I don’t think she really cares that he wrote this song. She has said before that her exes could write songs about her if they wanted to so why should she give a crap about paper doll? They broke up 4 years ago and she already said what she had to say. Why is he just now addressing their break-up?

Brad I am sorry you are wrong. She does write many of her own songs. I love Taylor and John and I think the song shows that he still cares deeply for her. Otherwise it wouldn’t matter. I don’t think it really matters when people put Taylor down. She is laughing all the way to the bank. The new song with TIm McGraw is #1 on the charts. I think the proof is in the pudding.

who cares? Taylor swift is a garbage little puppet and she has never actually written a song by herself. when she was 12 her father hired a Grammy award winning songwriter to co write with her. look it up. anyone who says she’s “one of the greatest songwriters of our time” is a complete moron and I feel sorry for your narrow scope on modern music.

actually, she wrote the entirety of her “Speak Now” album by herself. Both the lyrics and the music. in addition to this, the majority of her songs are written by HERSELF.

Her father hired a writer to COACH her, not to actually create the products. Most songwriters have paid mentors as teenagers. She wrote with Elizabeth for 8 years, less and less over time, until she wrote and composed her own album in its entirety at 21. That’s how professional songwriting works. Mayer was coached as well.

You’re a nutjob lol she writes almost all her songs by herself. And when she does have cowrites it’s listed in the liner. Liz Rose is one of her cowriters she goes back to here and there.

So what if he wrote a song about her? Taylor Swift does it all the time. They’re both songwriters, it’s what they do. Although Taylor isn’t exactly the best songwriter compared to the likes of Adele, Emeli Sande, Ke$ha, Bonnie Mckee, Skylar Grey, but she’s pretty close.

why not? I can’t wait to hear that!!
@jav no you are a joke. when it comes to songwriting, everybody knows who is better. Taylor might be a ‘Paper Doll’, but she is one of the best songwriters of our generation and I respect her as a great artist.

listen to All Too Well, Dear John, Back to December, Never Grow Up, Fifteen, White Horse (and many others tbh). Taylor is an amazing songwriter, don’t judge her just based on songs like 22 or WANEGBT.
