In an interview featured in the Winter 2015 issue of i-D magazine, Justin admitted that he was slightly over his head when he got involved with Selena. “I think with that relationship, I put so much of myself on the line with her because I was so distant with everyone else.”
“So when I found that love I was just like, “Woah, I want to hold on to this,'” Justin said, adding that he “put everything into” his young love with Selena. However, he recognized that at just 16 years old, he was not fully prepared for such a major commitment. “We were working out how to be in a relationship, how to be ourselves, who we were,” he said, “in the middle of having people judge our relationship through the media. I think that really messed my head up too.”
That kind of young, “messed up” headspace is why Justin ended up cheating on Selena, causing them to break up, get back together, only to break up again. Jelena seemed to split for good in Oct. 2014, and they haven’t gotten back together since.
However, though Justin might regret getting so deeply involved with Selena when he wasn’t old enough to vote, since he’s turned 21, he’s had nothing but kindness for his ex. From saying how gorgeous she was at the 2015 Met Gala to showing support for her Victoria’s Secret performance, Justin has been there for his “homey.” And Selena has returned the love towards her ex.
Now that they’re older, is there another chance at love for Jelena? Justin thinks it’s possible. While talking to Ellen DeGeneres, he said that “I think maybe once we figure ourselves out, we can comeback and make an awesome duo or she finds someone awesome and I’ll find someone awesome. I just want her to be happy.”
