‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Martin Henderson Replacing Patrick Dempsey As Series Regular?

There's a new doctor in town! 'Grey's Anatomy' has confirmed that Martin Henderson will be joining the series for season 12 as a male lead. Is he the official replacement for Patrick Dempsey? Martin Henderson, 40, will be the next great surgeon joining the Grey-Sloane Memorial staff on Grey's Anatomy. Very little detail is available about the new doctor, so is it safe to assume that he is replacing Patrick Dempsey, 49, after his character, Derek Shepherd, was tragically and unexpectedly killed in season 11? Let's review!

He’s handsome, he’s from New Zealand, and he has a history of working with Shonda Rhimes. But, will new male lead Martin Henderson really fill the void that McDreamy left in our hearts when he was killed off of Grey’s Anatomy? It’s a good question to ask, and no matter what anyone says — it’s totally okay that you’re even thinking about it.

Although ABC refused to provide any details about Martin’s presence on the series, TV Line has confirmed that he is a series regular and the new male lead. The former holder of that title was Patrick, so it’s definitely safe to assume that Martin has been cast as his “replacement” of sorts. Although he will obviously not be playing the role of Derek Shepherd, it’s possible he could be Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) new love interest.

There are other possibilities for Martin’s role that do not revolve around the gaping hole that McDreamy left or Meredith’s love life. At the end of season 11, the future of many characters were seemingly left up in the air. As you might remember, April was really on the fence about going back into a war zone to help save lives. Plus, Hunt had announced that he was stepping down as chief — potentially to enlist back into the military. It’s also unclear whether or not Jo will return, especially after her and Alex’s massive blowout over Meredith and the kids moving in with them.

We’ll just have to wait and see where Martin falls into place once Grey-Sloane opens it’s doors for us again in fall 2016!
