Creator April Blair reveals what she had planned for Jane & Billy’s first kiss, Ben & Rita’s race to the altar, and more.

Jane By Design fans were crushed last week when ABC Family announced the show wouldn’t be returning for a second season — I coped with carbs —  but fortunately, creator April Blair was more than happy to give HollywoodLife.com an exclusive breakdown of what we would have seen in season two. And trust me, it would have been awesome.

1. Eli to the rescue: Curious how Jane (Erica Dasher) was going to explain to Gray (Andie MacDowell) and Eli (Bryan Dechart) why she was backstage at a high-school play? ”Our idea was that Eli was going to cover for her,” April says. “There were moments in episode 18 where he looked at the costumes crookedly, and throughout the play he pieced it together.”

2. Jane & Billy’s big moment: It sounds like Jane and Billy’s (Nick Roux) shippers would have been very happy with the show’s second season. “For two [finales], we really pulled the rug out from under people,” April admits. “But [in the second season], we wanted to give people that kiss, the moment they both acknowledge they have feelings for each other. We were really excited to do that, and give that to the fans.”

3. Wedding bells for Ben & Rita: April says there was a lot of discussion about Ben’s (David Clayton Rogers) future with Rita (Smith Cho), now that he decided to stay in town: “Do they get engaged? Will Rita become a bit of a bridezilla, obsessed with planning her wedding? We definitely wanted to have Ben propose next season.”

4. Jeremy & India: Things between Jeremy (Rowly Dennis) and India (India de Beaufort) would only become more complicated in season two. ”Jeremy would come back and start his own independent label, becoming a competitor for Donovan Decker,” April reveals. “His romance with India would grow, and they would become more serious — but at the same time, they would become professional rivals.”

5. Amanda, please: Amanda Clark (Briga Heelan) may not have found love with Ben, but April says there would definitely have been romance in her future. ”We were thinking of maybe having Amanda begin dating Todd [the other teacher originally vying for Rita's attention], and it would become a competitive couple thing. When you’re engaged or dating, you always have a friend that tries to one-up you. So we’d keep Amanda and Rita’s competition alive, but it would be less about Ben, and more about the rivalry between the two women.”

6. Mom’s back: “We were hoping to have [Jane's mom] make a reappearance,” April says. Teri Hatcher was contracted to direct an episode of season two, but actually having her appear as Kate in front of the camera ”would really be subject to Teri’s availability.”

How do you feel about Jane ending before its time was really up? Which of these potential story lines would you have loved to see? Drop me a comment with your thoughts! (We can get through this together.)

Please bring back Jane BY design! Can you switch to the CW somehow or another network? The show was Far better than some of the ones they kept! It had such potential and was loved by many!

I wish Jane by design hadn’t canceled because it was such a good show on fashion and it always kept me on my toes.but i would have love to see the Louvre between Jane and her bf and the coworker. It was a great show that could never be finished.
Plus ABC should have finished what they have started. Especially since they finished many other shows that weren’t as good as Jane by design.

Very sad to find this page and see that there wouldn’t be a season 2! I just finished watching it on Netflix… I loved that this show was very entertaining while preserving its sweetness (i.e., PG) Very few shows these days pull both of those qualities off! I’m also disappointed to not get to see Jane and Eli have their day with him in on the secret. I felt like Eli and Jane had MUCH better chemistry than her and Billy ever had and was really routing for those two more than Jane & Billy as an item (romantically, Billy meshed way better with Zoe). And the main theme seems to be about growing up, growing into yourself and consequently out-growing old things (e.g., Ben & his HS baseball dream). Part of that, I did hope, like most of these commentators, would include a wrap up for the lingering “what if?” between the childhood friends. If for nothing more than than to add confidence to the directions in which they were both growing. Such a great show!! I’m still hopeful another network will pick it up!

I am so emotionally distressed WHY I DIDN’T GET TO SEE BILLY AND JANE GET TOGETHER. And Jane was such a good influence/role model. Like seriously ABC the one show I could handle watching. This is ridiculous. All the characters were relate-able and love-able. I’m emotionally attached and my heart was ripped out. :(

I do miss it. It was something that I actually watch with my kids. The other shows like PLL and Lying games and even some of the other upcoming series are just a little to adult for my 9 yr old even though they market it IMO, to the tween market. This series was PG enough and still had that element of a little girl playing dress up. I am disappointed that ABC Family decided to cancel the show with out giving a fair shot for the show to garner a larger fan base and to prove its worth. I hope another network picks it up.
AND BTW!!!!!!…… I HATE IT WHEN NETWORKS MAKE SUCH A RIVETING CLIFFHANGER THEN CANCEL A SERIES. ORDER ONE MORE SEASON AND TIE OFF THE LOSE ENDS. I have invested a year of my time and my daughters in the characters and the show to just be let down so hard. I want to see all the characters have a happy ending… even India deserves it.

This still hurts my heart to know one of my favorite shows were canceled. JBD was such an amazing inspiring show that kept me motivated. Although I also love the mysterious show ABCFam has to offer like the lying game and PLL; I felt JBD was more related to reality,, with that drop of drama added here and there. I hope ABC reconsiders one day or the writers make a movie saga to the show as well as the nine lives of chloe king. siiigh anyways I’m sure ABC will not read this but it didn’t hurt to try.

I am so sad ABC Family decided to end this show so prematurely. There was so much left undone! Honestly, the character’s had background history and the storylines were great and captivating. It seemed pretty popular on Hulu, I wouldn’t be able to watch it on t.v. but I wouldn’t miss it once they put an episode up a few days later, I don’t understand why it was ended.
Wish there was some way to bring it back.

My two teenaged girls and I are crushed! We loved watching the show together and chatting about the story line as well as the cute clothes!! We were looking so forward to season 2 and excited to see if Jane and Billy would fall in love. Also would have loved to see Ben & Rita get married! Any chance at all for a season 2????

I’m really mad that the show ended. It’s really stupid how they cancelled it. I was really looking forward to the next season. I don’t think I’ll watch any more ABC Family series if they’re just gonna cancel the shows that people love and watch and want to know what’s going to happen next. Jane By Design didn’t deserve to get cancelled.

I too have stopped watching ABC Faily shows. I would not watch any new shows that ABC Family as put on the air. Also I have been writing to fox, cbs, TNT, USA and hallmark tv stations to see if they would renw my favorite shows. The shows Im hoping that these stations would take is Jane By Design, Bunheads, and SMASH. All these shows has been cancelled but i would like to see a rebirth of these family shows.

I’m so disappointed that abc family dropped this show! My kids and I watched all of season 1 and were waiting patiently for the next season. please please PLEASE bring back JANE BY DESIGN! There aren’t many shows on tv that I approve of for my kids but this was one of them. The story line was great and jane is an inspiration to my 8 year old daughter….we need this show. I would much rather have her look up to jane than a reality tv star :/
