Ready to crack a smile? October 7 is World Smile Day and we can’t help but perk up at that fact. These days, we have Harvey Ross Ball to thank for the global occasion. Harvey was the commercial artist who popularized the smiley face design. In his earlier years, he studied fine arts at the Worcester Art Museum School and became an apprentice to a local sign painter.

When he got older he founded the World Smile Foundation in 1999, which is a non-profit charitable trust that supports children’s causes. The foundation organized the first World Smile Day and declared that every first Friday of October of each year will be dedicated to the holiday.  And the special holiday was to be dedicated to nothing but “good cheer and good works.” World Smile Day is ultimately accompanied by the idea “Do an act of kindness – help one person smile.”
