When it comes to skateboarding, there are few that are bigger than Tony Hawk. Nicknamed the “Birdman,” Tony is credited with being the one to first complete a documented “900” skateboarding trick, landing the impressive feat on June 27, 1999. While growing up in San Diego, Tony took to skateboarding early on, as it was a great outlet for his excessive, youthful energy. He turned pro at age 14, and was one of the members of the legendary Bones Brigade skateboarding team in the mid-1980s. Tony’s legacy grew throughout skate culture in the 80s and early 90s, thanks to skate videos and magazines like Thrasher. He was Josh Brolin’s skater-double for 1986’s Thrashin’ movie, and he made a brief appearance in Police Academy 4 in 1987. The most noteworthy appearance in his early career came in 1989’s Gleaming the Cube, but greater fame awaited Tony. The same year that he landed the “900,” Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater hit the video game world. Since then, Tony has become a pop culture icon, appearing in movies, television shows, and on the podium of the X-Games.
