Three 6 Mafia are not just a hip hop group hailing from Memphis – they’re Oscar winners, baby! Forming in 1991 first as a horror-themed underground group, they went on to experience mainstream success in the early 2000s. Though the lineup would shift and change over the years, the two constants were Juicy J and DJ Paul. Other notable members include Gangsta Boo, Crunchy Black, Lord Infamous, Project Pat, and Indo G. After releasing a number of solo albums, side projects, and group efforts via independent and underground labels, the group signed to Columbia, and their major-label debut – 2003’s ‘Da Unbreakables’ – failed to move the needles. The follow-up, ‘Most Known Unknown,’ saw them achieve the mainstream success they desired. Then, in 2006, they won the Academy Award for Best Original Song with “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp,” from the film, ‘Hustle & Flow.’ The group would release ‘Last 2 Walk’ in 2008, their (current) final studio album.
