Introducing: ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’

Introducing: ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’ — What happens when you and your partner are in a loving, long-term relationship, but one of you is not ready for marriage? You give — or receive — an ultimatum, of course. That’s exactly the case for the five couples on the first season of ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’. The show welcomes 10 queer people to the experiment, five of which are ready for marriage (ultimatum givers) and five who are not (ultimatum receivers).

The ultimatum receivers must decide if they will accept a proposal by their original partners at the end of the experiment, decline and leave single, or embark on a new relationship with someone else. Meanwhile, the ultimatum givers also get the chance to explore new relationships with new people.

The debut season of ‘The Ultimatum Queer Love’ is hosted by actress JoAnna Garcia Swisher and promises to be full of raw, honest emotion. The first four episodes dropped on May 24, 2023 and let fans meet the original couples and the newly formed relationships as they emabrk on a trial week of marriage.

Sam And Aussie

Sam And Aussie — Sam, 31, and Aussie, 42, describe their first time meeting as ‘something that you see in the movies’, according to their Netflix profile. They first met via an ‘online social group for LGBTQ+ people during the pandemic’ and decided to take their romance offline and have been inseparable for the past one and a half years.

Yoly And Mal

Yoly And Mal — Yoly, 34, and Mal, 36, have been together for three years, although it has not been easy. They first met at Pride in Chicago, but then broke up and reconciled at one point. They also moved to Seattle together.

Raelyn And Lexi

Raelyn And Lexi — Raelyn, 27, and Lexi, 25, met on Bumble three years ago and have been together ever since. Lexi is ready to marry Rae, but Rae is not so sure she sees that next step in the near future.

Tiff And Mildred

Tiff And Mildred — Tiff, 32, and Mildred, 33, have been together ever since Tiff slid into Mildred’s DMs. Mildred takes marriage seriously, especially as a single and previously divorced mom.

Xander And Vanessa

Xander And Vanessa — Xander and Vanessa, both 30, have been together for years, but actually knew each other from high school when they’d hang out together with their former boyfriends. A full-circle moment, for sure! They disagree on marriage, though, as Vanessa is nervous about settling down and potentially missing out on connecting with other people.

The New Couples

The New Couples — After a week of dating each other, the 10 newly singles formed new relationships and entered a trial week of marriage, during which they lived in an apartment together to get a taste of what their relationship could look like in reality. While some connections appear to have gotten stronger, the live-in trial seemed to end the honeymoon phase super fast. Get the low-down below.

Lexi & Mal – Lexi and Mal’s relationship seemed to be going smoothly until Lexi found out that her ex, Rae, slept with Vanessa. Mal, however, stuck by Lexi’s side and assured her she will always be there for her.

Vanessa & Raelyn – Vanessa and Rae have enjoyed a solid relationship throughout the entire experience, although Rae did not seem as outwardly thrilled about their sex ad Vanessa was.

Tiff & Sam – Tiff and Sam have endured a rocky romance ever since moving in with each other. They got into a serious fight that involved Tiff raising her voice and crying over Tiff not believing that Sam will be accepting of her dog. Sam, meanwhile, said she feels that Tiff’s relationship with her dog will trump any new romance in her life, which is concerning. Tiff and Sam eventually spoke through their issues and move forward.

Aussie & Mildred – Aussie and Mildred have endured good and bad days during their trial marriage. Mildred expressed her disappointment in Aussie because Aussie did not think of her when Aussie went grocery shopping. Aussie also has not offered to cook for Mildred, and Mildred called Aussie out on her empty promises.

Yoly & Xander – Yoly and Xander seem incredibly strong and connected on all levels during their trial marriage.

The End Result: Lexi And Rae

The End Result: Lexi And Rae — Lexi and Rae proposed to each other during the finale episode of ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’ and revealed during the reunion episode that they were planning on obtaining residences on the East and West coasts of America so they could be close to their families. However, after the reunion episode, which was filmed earlier in 2023, they went their separate ways.

On June 7, 2023 — the day the final two episodes of ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’ dropped — Lexi revealed she is ‘happier than ever’ in an Instagram post. Rae did not make any statement following the revelation that she is now single. Their decision to split was made together, as they decided it was best as their lifestyles no longer meshed.

Tiff And Mildred

Tiff And Mildred — Tiff asked for Mildred’s hand in marriage, and she accepted. Sadly, their relationship turned sour after they moved in together and had disagreements about their finances and lifestyles. Mildred accused Tiff of making no effort to further their relationship, including opening up a joint bank account or bonding with her teenage child. Mildred even accused her former lover of wanting to split rent three ways since there were three people living in the house.

Law enforcement got involved when they got into an argument that turned physical, as Mildred allegedly threw a pet gate and picture frame at Tiff during. She was then arrested.

Tiff and Mildred’s spotlight got so heated at the ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’reunion that Tiff stormed off the stage and did not return. ‘I had no ill intent toward [Mildred] and then she berates me onstage and it ripped open a huge Band-Aid for me. All the trauma I went through with her, the arguments we had and me just feeling humiliated and gaslit came right back,’ Tiff explained to Netflix’s ‘Tudum‘.

Further elaborating on why they were so upset at the reunion, Tiff added, ‘I didn’t mention her son, she mentions her son. I didn’t mention the arrest report, she mentions the arrest report. She lays everything out [in the] open, and I was absolutely shocked.’

Vanessa And Xander

Vanessa And Xander — Vanessa and Xander left the show broken up. Xander admitted she knew Vanessa wasn’t the one for her shortly into the show. ‘It was after Week 1 … before I even started my trial marriage with Yoly,” told ‘USA TODAY‘. Xander added that she went through with the entire process ‘out of respect for’ their four-year relationship.

Although they tried making things work when they both got back to Hawaii, Vanessa ultimately ended things after she saw Xander messaging Yoly. Yoly and Xander tried pursuing a relationship when they were both single, but as Xander told ‘Tudum’, the spark ‘wasn’t hitting the same way’.

Yoly And Mal

Yoly And Mal — Yoly accepted a proposal from Mal during the finale episode of ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’, despite her openly admitting she has deep feelings for Xander.

During the reunion episode, Mal revealed they were ‘happily broken up.’ Their split occurred at least two weeks after filming ended when they were on vacation together. Mal expressed her disappointment with Yoly during the reunion and said she felt misled by what really went on between her and Xander. She also explained that Yoly felt ‘like a dangerous stranger to her.

Mal also gave more insight into their breakup in a chat with ‘PEOPLE‘. ‘The way we process conflict is completely different. I think against both of our, I don’t know, standards that we have for ourselves and just morally misaligned and so morally and fundamentally, completely misaligned,’ she hypothesized. ‘We just didn’t handle conflict [in] a way that I think either one of us appreciated. That was for me. I can’t speak for her, but for me.’

‘I think for me, for our relationship, [the show] did get to the root of issues really fast. Whether it looked messy or not, it got to the root really, really fast,’ she added. ‘So I do think if we didn’t do the show, we would’ve ended up parting ways anyway, because I think we were just misaligned.’

Aussie And Sam

Aussie And Sam — Despite their rocky road on ‘The Ultimatum: Queer Love’, Aussie and Sam got engaged during the show’s finale episode and are still happily together.

Although Aussie’s entire family still does not know that Aussie is queer, Aussie said Sam has let Aussie explore how Aussie views gender. ‘I really am so lucky to be with this person, Aussie told ‘Tudum’. ‘She allowed that space for me to explore and I’m still exploring. Am I nonbinary, am I trans man? Am I transmasculine? These are all the things that weren’t in my vocabulary growing up. Having a partner who’s supportive in that journey has allowed me the space to do that.’

The couple is not rushing to get married, as they want to have a completely solid foundation both personally and together before they legally wed each other. ‘There’s still some healing for me to do on my end, and I’m going to get there,’ Aussie noted.
