National Geographic’s ‘The Right Stuff’ is a new series that will premiere on Disney+. The series is based on the iconic bestseller of the same name. ‘The Right Stuff’ explores the early days of the U.S. space program and the incredible story of America’s first astronauts, the Mercury Seven. Project Mercury recruited and trained the military’s best pilots to become the first American astronauts. The Mercury Seven become instant celebrities and became heroes before they went into space. The story focuses on the individual astronauts: John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Gordo Cooper, Wally Schirra, Scott Carpenter, Deke Slayton, and Gus Grissom. The series also examines the astronauts’ families, including Annie Glenn, who contends with a speech impairment in the public eye; Louise Shepard, who anchors her family while refusing to let Alan’s transgressions affect her home; and Trudy Cooper, an accomplished pilot who puts her own ambitions aside to present the image of a happy family.
