The latest addition to the Spider-Man saga is making fans think back on all the classic comic book films the character has spawned. Since 2002, the web-slinger has been played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. Tobey was the original big-screen Spider-Man, taking on the role of Peter Parker in the 2002 Sam Raimi-directed flick.
Sam talked about the pressure ahead of the film’s release back in 2002, telling MTV, “I feel like there’s a great bar of expectation that I have to meet. It better be good. That’s all I’m thinking, and that’s what occupies all of my waking hours and all of my sleepless nights. ‘Is it good enough? Is it right for the character?'”
‘Spider-Man’ was an all out success. It would make $829 million off of a $139 million budget and spawn 2 blockbuster sequels.
The film introduces Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, a nerdy teen who wakes up to find he has superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. When his beloved Uncle Ben is killed by criminals, he suits up as Spidey and starts to fight crime around the city. But he gets more than he bargained for when the supervillain The Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) starts to terrorize the down, leading to a battle between justice and chaos.
‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ star Andrew Garfield even called Tobey’s performance his “favorite” in a 2021 video for GQ, saying, “Cause that’s my childhood.”
