‘Making a Murderer’ gained many, many fans for its absolute tragedy, gore, and controversy. The intriguing documentary premiered on Netflix on December 18, 2015. Fans nationwide could not believe the stories they were hearing and seeing come to light for the first time ever. The main star, Steven Avery, was a convicted murderer who had been wrongfully convicted of sexual assault and attempted murder back in 1985. It was not until 18 years later that the Manitowoc County, Wisconsin native was officially declared not guilty when a new DNA test was released in 2003. Sadly, he had already spent nearly two decades in prison at that point.
Luckily, there were many people out there who still supported Avery, as there was a petition that was sent to the White House in December 2015 that aimed to pardon Avery. It garnered more than 500,000 signatures!
‘Making a Murderer’ has indeed become such a fan-favorite that it has won multiple awards, including a whopping four Primetime Emmy Awards in 2016.
