Ayanna Pressley is an American politician who serves as the United States Representative for Massachusetts’s 7th congressional district. She is a member of the Democratic party and earned her seat in the House after defeating Michael Capuano in the Democratic primary election in 2018. No Republican filed to run, so she was assured victory after the primary. Ayanna assumed office on Jan. 3 2019, becoming the first black woman who was elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Before running for her House seat, Ayanna was a member of the Boston City Council from 2010 until 2019. She was also the first woman of color to serve in this capacity. Ayanna has publicly called out President Donald Trump on a number of occasions. She is married to Conan Harris and has one stepdaughter through the relationship.
