Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been a subject of interest for true crime fans for many years. She is set to be released early from prison on Thursday, December 28, after serving eight years of her 10-year sentence for her involvement in the murder of her mother Dee Dee Blanchard. Very early in 2024, Gypsy, 32, will be the subject of a new Lifetime documentary, where she’ll discuss her case and her time in prison.
This isn’t the first time that Gypsy’s story has been the subject of a documentary or dramatized with actors. Her story was told in the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. She’s also been portrayed in the miniseries Love You to Death and The Act. Get all the details on her latest documentary here!
Gypsy Rose’s new documentary The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard will premiere on Lifetime on Friday, January 5 at 8 p.m. ET. The premiere is the first part of the 6-hour special, and it will feature in-depth interviews with Gypsy Rose. The next two parts will air on January 6 and 7.
In a press release, Gypsy Rose spoke about getting to share her story in the new documentary. “After a lifetime of silence, I finally get to use my voice to share my story and speak my truth. As a survivor of relentless child abuse, this docuseries chronicles my quest for liberation and journey through self-discovery,” she said. “I am unapologetically myself and unafraid to expose the hidden parts of my life that have never been revealed until now.”
Ahead of the documentary’s release, Gypsy Rose opened up about her feelings about the crime all these years later in an interview with People. “If I had another chance to redo everything, I don’t know if I would go back to when I was a child and tell my aunts and uncles that I’m not sick and mommy makes me sick,” she said. “Or, if I would travel back to just the point of that conversation with [former boyfriend] Nick [Godejohn] and tell him, ‘You know what, I’m going to go tell the police everything.’ I kind of struggle with that.”
After Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy Rose and Nick were caught. After they were caught, Gypsy Rose took a plea bargain where she would be sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in her mother’s death. She’ll be released on parole on December 28, 2023, after having served seven years of her sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Chillicothe, Missouri.
In the above-mentioned People interview, Gypsy Rose did express regret for her mom’s murder. “Nobody will ever hear me say I’m glad she’s dead or I’m proud of what I did. I regret it every single day,” she explained.
Gypsy Rose’s then-boyfriend Nick Godejohn murdered Dee Dee Blanchard in June 2015. Before the murder, Dee Dee would regularly lie about her daughter suffering from various medical issues, and she lied about her age. Since the murder, Gypsy Rose has accused her mom of other forms of abuse.
Gypsy Rose and Nick met online, and they planned the scheme to murder Dee Dee together. Gypsy Rose’s boyfriend snuck into Dee Dee’s room and stabbed her multiple times. Afterward, they had sex in Gypsy Rose’s room, and they fled to Wisconsin until they were caught. When they were caught, Gypsy Rose pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal in 2016. In 2019, Nick was convicted and given a life sentence for Dee Dee’s murder.
